A cluster of tetrodotoxin poisoning in Oman

Badria Alhatali et al.

Summary: This report describes five cases of tetrodotoxin poisoning in patients who consumed fried internal organs of local pufferfish from the coast of Oman. Patients exhibited typical TTX toxidrome symptoms, with most recovering completely, except for one patient who developed subarachnoid hemorrhage related to TTX poisoning, a complication not previously reported.

First occurrence of tetrodotoxins in bivalve mollusks from Northern Adriatic Sea (Italy)

Paola Bordin et al.

Summary: Tetrodotoxins are a potent neurotoxin with potentially fatal effects if ingested by humans. Recently, significant amounts of tetrodotoxins were detected in mussels collected in a specific area of the Northern Adriatic Sea in Italy, with the highest concentration ever found in mollusks in Europe.

Hybrid Antibody-Aptamer Assay for Detection of Tetrodotoxin in Pufferfish

Xhensila Shkembi et al.

Summary: This study developed an aptamer-based detection method for the rapid and sensitive detection of TTX in pufferfish, using next-generation sequencing technology. The results demonstrated that the developed hybrid antibody-aptamer sandwich assay outperformed several methods reported in the literature and commercial immunoassay kits.

Geographic Variations in the Toxin Profile of the Xanthid Crab Zosimus aeneus in a Single Reef on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan

Yuchengmin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found variations in the toxin profile of toxic xanthid crabs within different zones of the Yoshihara reef. The observation of stomach contents revealed that ascidians of specific genus could be a potential source of STXs carried by toxic xanthid crabs.

Levels and distribution of tetrodotoxin in the blue-lined octopus Hapalochlaena fasciata in Japan, with special reference to within-body allocation

Yuta Yamate et al.

Summary: Researchers explored the evolution of toxicity in the blue-lined octopus by measuring levels and distribution of TTX in different organs. They found significant individual differences in TTX concentration, with larger individuals generally having higher amounts. However, TTX concentrations in muscles and skin were not correlated with body weight. Strong positive correlation was found between TTX concentrations in the posterior salivary gland and muscles/skin, indicating a potential evolutionary fix in allocation ratios.

Distribution of Tetrodotoxin in Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas)

Monika Dhanji-Rapkova et al.

Summary: A potent and heat-stable toxin, TTX, accumulates in various marine bivalve species, including Pacific oysters, with the highest concentrations found in the digestive gland. TTX levels vary significantly between different geographical locations and within populations of oysters, suggesting high variability in toxin distribution.

Toxicological risks on the human health of populations living around the Mediterranean Sea linked to the invasion of non-indigenous marine species from the Red Sea: A review

R. Bedry et al.

Summary: The Mediterranean region is a popular travel destination, with over 330 million tourists in 2016 visiting mainly for seaside holidays. The introduction of thermophilic Red Sea species through the Suez Canal has raised concerns about health risks from venomous and poisonous marine species among scientists, medical personnel, and the public. As factors driving the introduction and dispersal of Red Sea biota in the Mediterranean are set to increase and international tourist arrivals are forecasted to rise to 500 million by 2030, an increase in intoxications and envenomations by alien marine species is expected and should be prepared for.

Keeping Lagocephalus sceleratus off the Table: Sources of Variation in the Quantity of TTX, TTX Analogues, and Risk of Tetrodotoxication

Georgios Christidis et al.

Summary: The invasion of the tetrodotoxin-bearing silver-cheeked toadfish in the Mediterranean Sea poses a threat to public safety, particularly fish from the Libyan Sea showing a higher risk of causing tetrodotoxication; the study found that toxin concentrations in Lagocephalus sceleratus are influenced by tissue type, geographic origin, sex, and maturity stage.

Tetrodotoxins in French Bivalve Mollusks-Analytical Methodology, Environmental Dynamics and Screening of Bacterial Strain Collections

Damien Reveillon et al.

Summary: Tetrodotoxins have been identified in European shellfish at relatively low levels, with a lack of sufficient data on occurrence. Studies on shellfish and bacterial strains found no TTX analog in bacteria, despite its presence in shellfish. Survey of bivalves in French production areas revealed fluctuating concentrations of TTX, confirming the complexity of the link between bacteria, bivalves, and TTX.

Samuel A. Goldlust et al.

Summary: The study found that tetrodotoxin (TTX) may have potential efficacy in treating chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP). Although there was no significant difference in average Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) scores, the 30 μg twice daily TTX cohort showed significant differences from the placebo group in some secondary quality of life (QOL) indicators. Adverse events were mostly mild to moderate, with oral paresthesia and hypoesthesia being the most common.

Tetrodotoxins (TTXs) and Vibrio alginolyticus in Mussels from Central Adriatic Sea (Italy): Are They Closely Related?

Simone Bacchiocchi et al.

Summary: Tetrodotoxins (TTXs) have raised concerns in Europe in recent years, prompting the European Food Safety Authority to set recommended thresholds for TTX in mollusks and call for data collection to conduct a more comprehensive risk assessment. A study in the Marche region of Italy assessed TTX levels in mussels harvested in 2018-2019, as well as the presence of Vibrio spp. carrying genes associated with TTX biosynthesis. The study found some mussels contaminated with TTXs, but further investigation is needed to determine the potential threat of TTXs in the region.
