Vibrio mediterranei, a potential emerging pathogen of marine fauna: investigation of pathogenicity using a bacterial challenge inPinna nobilisand development of a species-specific PCR

K. B. Andree et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the pathogenicity of Vibrio mediterranei in Pinna nobilis, identified virulence genes in the strain, and found that temperatures of 24 degrees C or higher trigger the onset of virulence. The specific Vm atpA PCR assay developed in this study can aid in the management of future epizootics and improve surveillance capabilities for mortality events involving Vibrios.

Isolation and identification of Streptomyces sp. Act4Zk, a good producer of Staurosporine and some derivatives

Z. Khosravi Babadi et al.

Summary: In this study, a new DNA extraction technique was developed for the molecular identification of the strain Streptomyces sp. Act4Zk, leading to the discovery of its potential bioactivities. Strain Streptomyces sp. Act4Zk is likely a new species of Streptomyces with high antifungal and antibacterial activity.

Increasing signs of degradation of shallow water coral reefs due to repeated bleaching and spatial competition among benthic substrates

Bitopan Malakar et al.

Summary: Recent years have seen a prevalence of summer coral bleaching in the coastal waters of India, particularly in areas like Wandoor and Burmanullah in South Andaman. This repeated bleaching has led to a shift in benthic dynamics, with coral domination being replaced by macroalgae and sponges. The study confirms the multispecies domination of macroalgae in Wandoor and single species domination of sponges in Burmanullah in shallow reef ecosystems.

Mono- and multispecies biofilms from a crustose coralline alga induce settlement in the scleractinian coral Leptastrea purpurea

Lars-Erik Petersen et al.

Summary: This study isolated multiple microbial strains from a crustose coralline alga, with certain specific strains identified as capable of inducing settlement behavior in larvae of the brooding scleractinian coral. The findings suggest a potential role for bacteria in the settlement process of scleractinian corals, with specific bacterial species playing a significant role in inducing coral larvae settlement.

A Soft Spot for Chemistry-Current Taxonomic and Evolutionary Implications of Sponge Secondary Metabolite Distribution

Adrian Galitz et al.

Summary: Marine sponges are important sources for discovering novel bioactive compounds, with their secondary metabolites being sought-after for pharmaceutical applications. Understanding the distribution of metabolites to sponge lineages is crucial for revealing compound production pathways and evolution, potentially leading to more efficient bioprospecting.

The Advantage of Automatic Peer-Reviewing of C-13-NMR Reference Data Using the CSEARCH-Protocol

Wolfgang Robien

Summary: This study systematically investigates the quality of experimental C-13-NMR spectra published in the journal Molecules from 1996 to 2015 using CSEARCH technology. The results show that using the CSEARCH-Robot-Referee during peer review can prevent trivial assignment errors and wrong structure proposals. Comparison of key numbers with other journals in natural product chemistry indicates a similar level of quality among publishers.
