Filtering Activity and Nutrient Release by the Keratose Sponge Sarcotragus spinosulus Schmidt, 1862 (Porifera, Demospongiae) at the Laboratory Scale

Roberta Trani et al.

Summary: Sponges play a key role in filter-feeder benthic communities, and research on the filtering activity of Sarcotragus spinosulus against Vibrio parahaemolyticus shows its potential in microbial bioremediation. The study demonstrates the efficient filtration capability of S. spinosulus in reducing the pathogenic bacteria load and suggests it as a promising candidate for removing V. parahaemolyticus from seawater while contributing to nutrient load reduction.
