Zinc oxide nanoparticles inhibit bacterial biofilm formation via altering cell membrane permeability

Tanvir Kaur et al.

Summary: The biogenic synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles showed significant antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity against various bacterial strains. The nanoparticles caused changes in bacterial cell membrane permeability, leading to leakage of nucleic acid, which likely contributed to their anti-biofilm potential.

Enhanced reduction of polymicrobial biofilms on the orthodontic brackets and enamel surface remineralization using zeolite-zinc oxide nanoparticles-based antimicrobial photodynamic therapy

Maryam Pourhajibagher et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the anti-biofilm and anti-metabolic activities of zeolite-zinc oxide nanoparticles (Zeo/ZnONPs)-based antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) against pre-formed polymicrobial biofilms on orthodontic brackets, as well as the remineralization efficacy on enamel lesions induced by polymicrobial biofilms. The findings showed that aPDT using Zeo/ZnONPs reduced cell viability and metabolic activity of biofilms, and increased enamel surface microhardness. Overall, Zeo/ZnONPs-based aPDT demonstrated potent anti-biofilm effects and excellent remineralization efficacy.

Targeted Genome Reduction of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Strain PAO1 Led to the Development of Hypovirulent and Hypersusceptible rDNA Hosts

Melanie Grosjean et al.

Summary: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is commonly used to study antibiotic resistance and pathogenesis, but its natural resistance to antibiotics and ability to produce virulence factors hinder its biotechnological potential. By reducing the genome of this bacterium, researchers developed hypovirulent and hypersusceptible recombinant DNA hosts, laying the foundation for further optimization for biotechnological applications.

Burns and biofilms: priority pathogens and in vivo models

Evgenia Maslova et al.

Summary: Burn wounds can severely damage human skin and lead to infections, which are the leading cause of death among burn wound patients. Surviving patients may face difficulties in treating infections, causing delayed healing and prolonged hospital stays. Biofilm formation by bacteria in burn wounds contributes to treatment failure and mortality, as it makes the bacteria more resistant to disinfection and immune responses.
