A concise review of the red macroalgaeChondracanthus teedei(Mertens ex Roth) Kutzing andChondracanthus teedeivar.lusitanicus(JE De Mesquita Rodrigues) Barbara & Cremades

Leonel Pereira et al.

Summary: Chondracanthus teedei, a small red alga widely distributed in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Indian Ocean, thrives in lower intertidal and shallow subtidal habitats, preferring semi-shaded areas in semi-exposed or protected regions, and tolerant of mud and sand. With high levels of protein and hybrid carrageenans, it has potential applications in food, cosmetics, and possesses antifungal and antiviral properties.

Lectin from red algae Amansia multifida Lamouroux: Extraction, characterization and anti-inflammatory activity

Jacilane Ximenes Mesquita et al.

Summary: Seaweed lectins, such as the one isolated from the red algae Amansia multifida in this study, have shown promising anti-inflammatory properties by modulating inflammatory parameters like paw edema, leukocyte migration, oxidative stress, and proinflammatory cytokines. The lectin was characterized by various methods, including ion exchange chromatography and circular dichroism spectroscopy, and a 30 K Da protein with a major secondary structure arranged in beta-strand elements was identified. The results suggest that this seaweed lectin could be a valuable biotechnological tool in pharmacology for treating inflammation-related conditions.

Seaweed Protein Hydrolysates and Bioactive Peptides: Extraction, Purification, and Applications

Javier Echave et al.

Summary: Seaweeds are not only utilized for obtaining pigments, polysaccharides, or phenolic compounds, but are also considered a valuable source of protein due to their rich composition in fiber, minerals, and proteins. The extraction of seaweed proteins requires disruptive methods, which may result in the co-extraction of non-protein molecules, affecting the yield. Careful selection of sample pretreatment, extraction, and purification techniques is essential based on the characteristics of the macroalgae and target proteins.

Man-Specific Lectins from Plants, Fungi, Algae and Cyanobacteria, as Potential Blockers for SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Coronaviruses: Biomedical Perspectives

Annick Barre et al.

Summary: Betacoronaviruses use spikes on the virion envelope to attach and infect host cells, with the spike proteins containing receptor binding domains for specific recognition of host cell receptors. Mannose-specific lectins have the potential to target and detect coronaviruses due to their ability to recognize complex and high-mannose glycans on the spike proteins. Pea lectin, snowdrop lectin, and griffithsin are examples of mannose-binding lectins that could be useful in targeting coronavirus infections.

Optimization of Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Pelvetia canaliculata to Sunflower Oil

Gabriela Sousa et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that extracts from Pelvetia canaliculata L. macroalga can enhance the oxidative stability of sunflower oil. After adding 12.5% algae and conducting 20 minutes of ultrasound-assisted extraction, the antioxidant activity (FRAP) of the supplemented oil increased by 6-fold, with the final samples retaining 40% of their initial antioxidant activity.
