Stress induced carbon fiber orientation for enhanced thermal conductivity of epoxy composites

Maohua Li et al.

Summary: Polymer composites with high thermal conductivity, achieved by aligning carbon fibers under stress, have been developed. These composites exhibit a thermal conductivity as high as 32.6 W m(-1) K-1. Comparison of carbon fiber alignment conditions in different composites was conducted using micro compute tomography and scanning electron microscopy.

Ultrahigh-Aspect-Ratio Boron Nitride Nanosheets Leading to Superhigh In-Plane Thermal Conductivity of Foldable Heat Spreader

Qingwei Yan et al.

Summary: A rapid and high-yield method based on a microfluidization technique is developed to obtain exfoliated BNNS with a record high aspect ratio of approximate to 1500 and low degree of defects. The composite film made of BNNS and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix exhibits an in-plane thermal conductivity of 67.6 W m(-1) K-1 at a BNNS loading of 83 wt %, leading to a record high value of thermal conductivity enhancement (approximate to 35,500). This provides a practical route to produce electrically insulating polymer composites with high thermal conductivity for thermal management applications in modern electronic devices.

Interfacial modeling of flattened CNT composites with cyanate ester and PEEK polymers

William A. Pisani et al.

Summary: Flattened carbon nanotubes (flCNTs) show potential as a form of composite material reinforcement with self-assembly and packing efficiency, and computational methods are used to drive their design through efficient polymer selection. The choice of polymer matrix is crucial for the properties at the reinforcement/polymer interface, impacting the overall performance of the composite materials. The predictions suggest that the fluorinated cyanate ester demonstrates the best overall compatibility with flCNTs, showing higher resistance to shearing and peak tension strength compared to other polymer systems.

Fabrication of high thermal and electrical conductivity composites via electroplating Cu network on 3D PEEK/CF felt skeletons

Youli Sun et al.

Summary: A Cu-plated PEEK/carbon fiber felt composite material with superior heat dissipation properties was developed by electroplating Cu on 3D PEEK/CF felt skeletons and using a vacuum hot-pressing method. The 3D PEEK/CF-Cu composites exhibited high in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivity, excellent electrical conductivity, and strong heating and cooling capacity as confirmed through infrared thermal imaging. This unique method of fabricating high thermal conductive composites has potential applications in thermal management and antistatic materials.

Preparation of zinc oxide/poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) composites via the cold sintering process

Mingming Si et al.

Summary: Two powder-preparation methods enabled by the cold sintering process were utilized to fabricate unique ZnO-based varistor composites in this study, with successful integration of ZnO and PEEK. The addition of PEEK improved the electrical properties of the composites, as evidenced by a high breakdown electric field and nonlinear coefficient in the cold sintered samples. Impedance spectroscopy was used to investigate the conduction mechanism of the composites.

Soft and Self-Adhesive Thermal Interface Materials Based on Vertically Aligned, Covalently Bonded Graphene Nanowalls for Efficient Microelectronic Cooling

Qingwei Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, a 120 mu m-thick freestanding film composed of vertically aligned, covalently bonded graphene nanowalls (GNWs) was grown by mesoplasma chemical vapor deposition. With silicone filling, the fabricated adhesive TIMs showed a high through-plane thermal conductivity of 20.4 W m(-1) K-1 at a low graphene loading of 5.6 wt%, achieving cooling efficiency approximately 1.5 times higher than commercial TIMs. The TIMs strike a balance between high thermal conductivity and small bond line thickness, providing superior cooling performance for high-power LED chips.
