Ceratonia siliqua L. kibbles, seeds and leaves as a source of volatile bioactive compounds for antioxidant food biopackaging applications

Lidia Ait Ouahioune et al.

Summary: Macerates of kibbles, seeds and leaves of Ceratonia siliqua L. were prepared and analysed for their bioactive volatile compounds, antioxidant capacity, antimicrobial properties, and potential use in biopackaging. The study found that the seeds macerates had stronger antioxidant capacity, but weak antibacterial activity. The macerates were incorporated into a cellulose polymer adhesive to create a biopackaging film, which showed promising antioxidant activity and no migration of volatile or non-volatile compounds. The study suggests the potential for future production of active biopackaging at an industrial scale.

Study of bioactive volatile compounds from different parts of Pistacia lentiscus L. extracts and their antioxidant and antibacterial activities for new active packaging application

Sabrina Djebari et al.

Summary: The macerates of fruits and leaves of Pistacia lentiscus L. were analyzed for potential application in active packaging. The leaves macerate showed stronger antioxidant properties, higher phenolic and flavonoid content, and strong antimicrobial properties compared to the fruit macerate. Incorporating the leaves macerate extract into adhesive led to the design of a new active multilayer packaging with confirmed antioxidant capacity as a free radical scavenger.

Incorporation of salmon bone gelatine with chitosan, gallic acid and clove oil as edible coating for the cold storage of fresh salmon fillet

Yun Xiong et al.

Summary: Edible coating made from salmon bone gelatine has shown to be effective in preserving fresh salmon fillet by inhibiting oxidation, discoloration, and microbial growth. Combining gelatine with chitosan, gallic acid, and clove oil enhances the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the coating, prolonging the shelf life of salmon fillet for at least 5 days.
