Reconstructing crustal thickness evolution from europium anomalies in detrital zircons

Ming Tang et al.

Summary: A new data compilation shows a positive correlation between zircon Eu/Eu* and crustal thickness in intermediate to felsic rocks, which has been used to infer crustal thickness. The calibration of a crustal thickness proxy based on Eu anomalies in zircons allows for the reconstruction of crustal thickness evolution in magmatic arcs and orogens. Analysis of detrital zircons from southern Tibet reveals two episodes of crustal thickening since the Cretaceous, temporally consistent with contractional deformation of sedimentary strata.
