Summary: The study measured the concentrations and fluxes of CH4 and CO2 in rivers and lakes in the megacity of Beijing, China, finding high CH4 emissions from urban inland waters, with ebullition playing a significant role. The CH4 emissions accounted for 20% of CO2 emissions in terms of the carbon release and were 1.7 times higher in terms of CO2 equivalent emissions from Beijing inland waters, indicating a positive feedback between greenhouse gas emissions and climate warming.
