Facial nerve monitoring during parotid gland surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: Facial nerve monitoring during parotid gland surgery remains a debated topic among Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeons. A meta-analysis of 10 studies showed that the use of intraoperative facial nerve monitoring may decrease the risk of immediate and permanent postoperative facial nerve weakness, but more prospective randomized trials are needed to confirm these findings.

Effectiveness of intraoperative facial nerve monitoring and risk factors related to postoperative facial nerve paralysis in patients with benign parotid tumors: A 20-year study with 902 patients

Risk Factors of Postoperative Facial Palsy for Benign Parotid Tumors: Outcome of 1,018 Patients

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed data from 1,018 patients who underwent initial surgery for benign parotid tumors between 1999 and 2020. The overall rate of postoperative facial nerve palsy was 19.5%, with higher rates in patients with large tumors or deep lobe tumors. Improvement in facial palsy occurred within 24 months post-surgery in all cases, with no instances of permanent facial palsy.
