Application of polypropylene membranes hydrophilized by plasma for water desalination by membrane distillation

Marek Gryta

Summary: Surface modifications by plasma treatment significantly increased the surface porosity of the membrane, leading to a more than two-fold increase in permeate flux and a significant reduction in oil fouling. Despite the surface hydrophilization, the membranes showed good resistance to wetting and scaling during desalination of lake water and Baltic Sea water over several months.

A polyvinylpyrrolidone-based surface-active copolymer for an effective marine antifouling coating

Hongshuang Guo et al.

Summary: A novel surface-active copolymer based on PVP and PDMS was designed and incorporated into a PDMS matrix to form a surface-renewable antifouling coating. The copolymer exhibited outstanding antifouling and fouling-release properties, with higher PVP content leading to better performance. The long-term antifouling capability of the coating was demonstrated in marine field tests, offering a promising solution to marine biofouling issues.

Universal Intraductal Surface Antifouling Coating Based on an Amphiphilic Copolymer

Hongshuang Guo et al.

Summary: A universal and facile method based on an amphiphilic copolymer was developed to immobilize an intraductal surface antifouling coating for a variety of polymeric catheters. The copolymer-modified intraductal surface was then infused with aqueous I-2 to form the PVP-I-2 complex, endowing the coating with bactericidal activity. The findings provide a new avenue toward facile and universal fabrication of intraductal surface antifouling catheters, offering a superior option for decreasing the consumable costs in industrial production and alleviating the pain of replacing catheters for patients.

Highly Sensitive Porous PDMS-Based Capacitive Pressure Sensors Fabricated on Fabric Platform for Wearable Applications

Simin Masihi et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel PDMS-based capacitive pressure sensor with optimized dielectric layer porosity was developed for wide-range pressure sensing applications in sports field. By adjusting curing temperature, HNO3/PDMS concentration, and PDMS ratio, the sensitivity of pressure sensors was improved, with higher porosity achieved at higher curing temperatures, HNO3 concentrations, and PDMS ratios. The pressure sensor array was successfully applied in a wearable fit cap for measuring and mapping pressures on a player's head while wearing a helmet, demonstrating its potential in sports applications.
