Antibiotics removal from aquatic environments: adsorption of enrofloxacin, trimethoprim, sulfadiazine, and amoxicillin on vegetal powdered activated carbon

Javier Berges et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption of four representative antibiotics on vegetal powdered activated carbon, with trimethoprim and sulfadiazine showing higher affinity for the adsorbent. The sorption isotherms and kinetics varied among different antibiotics, with trimethoprim following a Langmuir type isotherm and amoxicillin following a Freundlich type isotherm. Additionally, the pH conditions influenced the performance of the antibiotics, with sulfadiazine and amoxicillin showing better removal in acidic conditions and trimethoprim being favored in basic environments.

Fabrication of sand-based novel adsorbents embedded with biochar or binding agents via calcite precipitation for sulfathiazole scavenging

Abdullah Almajed et al.

Summary: Efficient and low-cost adsorbents for sulfathiazole removal were fabricated through enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) of sand embedded with binding agents. Enrichment with binding agents improved the performance of the adsorbents, with biochar enrichment showing the highest removal efficiency for sulfathiazole. The adsorption mechanisms were mainly attributed to pi-pi electron-donor-acceptor interactions, assisted by electrostatic interactions and H-bonding.

Summary: This study investigated the single and ternary removal of sulfonamides from water using granular activated carbon. The results showed that activated carbon had a higher affinity for sulfamethoxazole in ternary systems, and the total adsorption capacity doubled in ternary compared to single systems. Additionally, the study proposed three mathematical models to estimate adsorption capacity for each sulfonamide based on pH, temperature, and initial concentration.
