Augmented performance of solar desalination unit by utilization of nano-silicon coated glass cover for promoting drop-wise condensation

Amrit Kumar Thakur et al.

Summary: The study improved water yield and thermal performance of a solar still by changing the glass cover wettability using nano-silicon coating. The coating altered the condensation behavior, increasing water yield and showing good durability even after prolonged use. The coated solar still had higher evaporation efficiency and lower freshwater cost per liter, making it a cost-effective and efficient solution for clean water production.

Depletion of the Lubricant from Lubricant-Infused Surfaces due to an Air/Water Interface

Sam Peppou-Chapman et al.

Summary: The study investigates how an air/water interface depletes lubricant from lubricant-infused surfaces (LIS) by varying the chemistry of both the lubricant and the substrate, finding that a thick layer of excess lubricant is always removed in just one dip regardless of wettability. It also reveals that lubricants that do not fully spread on the substrate deplete faster due to dewetting into droplets, and lubricants that spread onto the air/water interface are more susceptible to depletion. Additionally, the research shows that dynamic contact angles on surfaces tethered with liquidlike poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) chains remain constant over repeated immersions, suggesting low hysteresis is unlikely due to unbound polymer.

Why Are Water Droplets Highly Mobile on Nanostructured Oil-Impregnated Surfaces?

Chengcheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The research found that molecular interactions between two contacting liquids can be manipulated by implementing nanostructured substrates, leading to water repellency and addressing the issue of oil depletion. This offers insights into the molecular principles for controlling nanostructures to improve the performance of slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS).

Hydrophilic slippery surface enabled coarsening effect for rapid water harvesting

Zongqi Guo et al.

Summary: A coarsening effect is proposed in this study to rapidly remove water droplets with diameters <20 μm, improving water harvesting efficiency. This effect effectively reduces the drag force of the water droplets and enables rapid removal regardless of surface orientations.
