The role of socio-demographic characteristics in mediating relationships between people and nature

Kim C. Zoeller et al.

Summary: Research on ecosystem services often assumes a single human community of identical beneficiaries, but in reality, people's perceptions and experiences of ecosystem services can vary based on socio-demographic characteristics. Socio-demographic characteristics strongly influence human preferences for different avian cultural functional groups, demonstrating that the provision of cultural ecosystem services and benefits depends on the recipient of the service.

Nature's contributions to people: coproducing quality of life from multifunctional landscapes

Enora Bruley et al.

Summary: This study presents an operationalization of the IPBES framework with an in-depth analysis of nature's contributions to people (NCP) in a mountain social-ecological system. By distinguishing three coproduction types and describing the natural and human-derived capital involved in each, the study highlights nature's key contributions to quality of life, landscape multifunctionality, and the interlinkages among NCP. The analysis also documents how NCP coproduction creates social-ecological trade-offs and synergies, as well as collaborations and conflicts among beneficiaries at the landscape level.
