Electroconvulsive Therapy for Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Akihiro Takamiya et al.

Summary: The study reviewed previous clinical studies and found that ECT is effective in improving both motor and non-motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease, especially in those without psychiatric symptoms. ECT also significantly improved depression, psychosis, wearing-off phenomenon, without worsening cognitive functioning.

Impact of Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation on Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson's Disease: A Prospective Study

Marie des Neiges Santin et al.

Summary: The impact of subthalamic deep brain stimulation on impulse control disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease remains controversial. This study showed that subthalamic DBS can lead to improvement in impulse control disorders, with dopamine agonist dose reduction being the main driver. Patients with preoperative impulse control disorders were prone to postoperative apathy, while preoperative apathy increased the risk of developing postoperative de novo impulse control disorders.

Late onset depression: dopaminergic deficit and clinical features of prodromal Parkinson's disease: a cross-sectional study

Hiba Kazmi et al.

Summary: Patients with late onset depression (LOD) show worse motor and non-motor features associated with PD/DLB, as well as a higher rate of abnormal SPECT scans. These findings suggest that individuals with LOD should be considered at increased risk for PD/DLB.

Neuroimaging of Anxiety in Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review

Guillaume Carey et al.

Summary: Anxiety symptoms in Parkinson's disease are associated with structural and functional changes in the fear and limbic cortico-striato-thalamocortical circuits. The neuropathology of PD may affect these circuits in different ways, which explains the high prevalence of anxiety and associated symptoms in PD.

Depression and Nigral Neuron Density in Lewy Body Spectrum Diseases

Laura Saari et al.

Summary: In patients with Lewy body spectrum diseases, specifically those with comorbid depression, there is a significant decrease in dopamine neuron density in the substantia nigra. This suggests that the substantia nigra may play an important role in mood regulation in patients with Lewy body disorders.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of individual Parkinson's-informed, video-to-home cognitive-behavioral therapy with clinic-based treatment for depression in Parkinson's disease. The results showed that video-to-home cognitive-behavioral therapy outperformed clinic-based treatment across multiple depression measures, with effects maintained through 6 months follow-up.

Cerebral small vessel disease may worsen motor function, cognition, and mood in Parkinson ? s disease

Huimin Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed that comorbid cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) can have multi-dimensional effects on patients with Parkinson's disease, impacting motor function, cognition, depression, and anxiety. CSVD burden was significantly associated with motor dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and high levels of depression and anxiety in patients with PD. Management of cerebrovascular disease may help improve outcomes in PD patients.

Parkinson's Disease Subtypes: Critical Appraisal and Recommendations

Tiago A. Mestre et al.

Summary: The studies on PD subtypes have methodological shortcomings and questionable clinical applicability. Most studies did not achieve the highest rating on methodological quality checklists. The clinical importance of differences between subtypes and their potential treatment implications were rated poorly, indicating a need for new approaches that acknowledge individual-level heterogeneity and personalized medicine.

Networks Are Associated With Depression in Patients With Parkinson's Disease: A Resting-State Imaging Study

Haiyan Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers investigated the differences in intra-network and inter-network brain connectivity in Parkinson's disease patients with and without depression. They found abnormal functional connectivity values within and between several large-scale networks in patients with Parkinson's disease and depression, suggesting that these network aberrations could serve as biomarkers for distinguishing between depressed and non-depressed Parkinson's disease patients.
