Effects of embankment layouts on train aerodynamics in a wind tunnel configuration

Wenhui Li et al.

Summary: The study focused on crosswind stability of trains running on an embankment, using different embankment layouts in wind tunnel simulations. Results showed that aerodynamic coefficients of leading vehicles on the leeward track decreased rapidly with the extending length of the upstream embankment. Certain scenarios underestimated aerodynamic coefficients compared to more realistic scenarios, indicating the importance of considering finite-length embankments in wind tunnel tests for determining running safety.

Aerodynamic performance and dynamic behaviors of a train passing through an elongated hillock region beside a windbreak under crosswinds and corresponding flow mitigation measures

Zhengwei Chen et al.

Summary: The aerodynamic and dynamic behaviors of a train near an elongated hillock beside a windbreak under crosswind were analyzed, revealing the sudden impact of the elongated hillock on the train and proposing a mitigation measure. A certain distance from the windbreak could effectively reduce the impact on the train.

Comparative analysis of the aerodynamic characteristics on double-unit trains formed by different types of high-speed train

Xiaoshuai Huo et al.

Summary: The aerodynamic characteristics of double-unit trains composed of different types of high-speed trains have been studied using an improved delayed detached-eddy simulation (IDDES) method. The results show that the drag is smaller when the same HST units are connected, and the structures of vortex shedding in the coupling region differ for each case. The height order of the wake vortices also varies depending on the connection of different HST units.

A field study on the aerodynamics of freight trains

Ariq Quazi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the aerodynamic performance of shipping containers loaded on inter-modal freight trains through a full-scale field test. The results showed that in low wind conditions, the drag coefficient was significantly lower for containers located at large downstream distances, suggesting that previous studies have not fully detailed the drag profile of such containers. Additionally, the asymmetry of pressure distribution on the front of the container can be used as a proxy to determine the wind yaw angle at the train.

Numerical simulation of slipstreams and wake flows of trains with different nose lengths passing through a tunnel

Shuang Meng et al.

Summary: The study showed that the piston effect significantly influenced the slipstream profiles, with larger positive peaks as the train passed through a tunnel. The peak values of slipstream profiles decrease with increasing distances from the center of the track and the top of the rail. A longer nose length can reduce turbulence levels in the wake propagation region, ultimately improving safety and comfort for trackside individuals.

Full-scale tests of unsteady aerodynamic loads and pressure distribution on fast trains in crosswinds

Hongrui Gao et al.

Summary: This study conducted full-scale tests to investigate the influence of crosswinds on the aerodynamic loads of a fast streamlined train. The results showed that the mean values of aerodynamic load coefficients increased and then decreased with the yaw angle, reaching maximum values between 54.5 degrees and 59.6 degrees. The coefficients of variation of the aerodynamic load coefficients were approximately twice the turbulence intensity, indicating that the fluctuations were caused by wind speed oscillations. The dominant frequencies of the aerodynamic load coefficients were found to be at Strouhal numbers of 0-0.4.
