Are declines in insects and insectivorous birds related?

Douglas Tallamy et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown widespread declines in insect and bird populations, with insect decline hypothesized to be a significant factor contributing to the reduction of insectivorous bird populations. The specialization on host plants, food limitation in birds, fluctuation of insectivorous bird populations with insect prey supply, and the decline of terrestrial birds dependent on insects support this hypothesis. Understanding the consequences of insect declines can motivate actions to favor native plant species that support insect herbivores and reverse these declines.

Breeding Habitat Associations of Eastern Whip-Poor-Wills in Managed Forests

Kimberly J. Spiller et al.

Summary: Populations of the eastern whip-poor-will have declined, making it a species of high conservation concern. Research shows that whip-poor-wills are associated with forest stands with open canopies and intermediate levels of basal area, while their presence is negatively related to understory height. These findings provide managers with quantitative targets for whip-poor-will management.
