ZBTB2 represses HIV-1 transcription and is regulated by HIV-1 Vpr and cellular DNA damage responses

James W. Bruce et al.

Summary: ZBTB2, recruited to the HIV-1 promoter by ZASC1, represses transcription by interacting with cellular histone deacetylases. Activation of the ATR/DNA damage pathway, mediated by Vpr, regulates ZBTB2 relocalization and transcriptional activity, providing insights into HIV-1 gene expression regulation.

Discrimination between Functional and Non-functional Cellular Gag Complexes involved in HIV-1 Assembly

Yisong Deng et al.

Summary: Most GCC species are mainly composed of monomeric or dimeric Gag molecules bound to ribosomal complexes, representing a population of Gag not yet functionally committed for incorporation into viable virion precursors. A subset of large GCC complexes, with more than 20 Gag molecules, may be equivalent to membrane-associated puncta as genuine assembling-virus intermediates. These findings provide a rationale for the existence of diverse GCCs and lay the foundation for characterizing on-pathway intermediates in early virus assembly.
