Summary: The study of an UK EVD patient showed that both virus and host markers were predictive of the patient’s survival outcome. Despite an initially unfavorable prognosis, the comprehensive supportive care and application of medical countermeasures proved to be beneficial. The recurrence infection of the UK patient indicated a potential mechanism of prolonged viral replication.

Characterization of Ebola Virus-Associated Eye Disease

Persistence of Ebola virus in semen among Ebola virus disease survivors in Sierra Leone: A cohort study of frequency, duration, and risk factors

These findings highlight the importance of implementing a national semen testing program for Ebola epidemic preparedness and response, as well as emphasizing safe sex counseling and access to condoms during outbreaks. Further research is needed to understand the impact of viral RNA in semen on the transmission of Ebola virus.

Mucosal Challenge Ferret Models of Ebola Virus Disease

Summary: Recent studies have highlighted the domestic ferret as a valuable animal model for studying Ebola virus disease, particularly after exposure through oral and nasal mucosa. Ferrets challenged via ocular administration showed unremarkable disease progression throughout the study period, in contrast to those dosed via oral and nasal routes which met euthanasia criteria due to advanced disease 5-10 days post-challenge.
