Ilex paraguariensis extract provides increased resistance against oxidative stress and protection against Amyloid beta-induced toxicity compared to caffeine in Caenorhabditis elegans

Marina Lopes Machado et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the hydroalcoholic extract of Ilex paraguariensis and its caffeine component have neuroprotective effects by increasing lifespan, scavenging reactive oxygen species, reducing A beta-induced paralysis and AChE activity, with IPHE's protection also involving hsf-1 and daf-16 proteins.

Antioxidant properties and phenolic composition of Composed Yerba Mate

Geraldine Cheminet et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the antioxidant characteristics of composed yerba mate compared to traditional yerba mate, finding total polyphenols content ranging from 15 to 45 mg/g GAE. Antioxidant capacity was verified through in vitro and in vivo assays, with a high correlation between phenolic composition and activity of samples. Differences in polyphenol content, profile and antioxidant activity were significant when comparing traditional yerba mate with composed yerba mate.

A Randomized Crossover Intervention Study on the Effect a Standardized Mate Extract (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.) in Men Predisposed to Cardiovascular Risk

Karimi S. Gebara et al.

Summary: The study found that consuming mate CGAs did not significantly affect most cardiometabolic risk parameters, but did show a decrease in fasting glucose and an increase in HDL-c levels in some subjects. Furthermore, in a subgroup of the study population, significant decreases in CRP and IL-6 levels were observed.

A Case-Control Study of the Effects of Chimarrao (Ilex paraguariensis) and Coffee on Parkinson's Disease

Marcio Schneider Medeiros et al.

Summary: A case-control study in southern Brazil found high consumption of chimarrao, a caffeinated beverage made with IP, to be inversely associated with PD, with a similar inverse association observed with high coffee consumption. Chimarrao remained associated with PD even after adjusting for coffee intake, smoking history, and age, suggesting a possible protective role. Further research is needed to explore the potential protective effects of chimarrao on PD.

Zebrafish irritant responses to wildland fire-related biomass smoke are influenced by fuel type, combustion phase, and byproduct chemistry

W. Kyle Martin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the irritant potential of biomass smoke condensates from different fuels burned at varying temperatures using zebrafish larvae. Results showed that fuel type and burn condition significantly influenced the quantity and chemical composition of PM, with irritant responses correlating with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content.
