US women in thoracic surgery: reflections on the past and opportunities for the future

Summary: Despite women making up slightly more than 50% of all medical students in the US, they remain underrepresented in thoracic surgery. The lack of female representation in senior academic leadership positions reflects stagnation in progress, with important implications for workforce shortages and patient safety. Efforts in scholarships, leadership training, and mentorship may signify progress, but leadership engagement and top-down change are ultimately necessary for achieving equity and improving patient health and satisfaction.
