Evaluating steam oxidation kinetics of environmental barrier coatings

Kenneth Kane et al.

Summary: The study shows that EBCs have a certain effect on reducing the rate of SiO2 formation, especially when paired with a Si bond coating. The adhesion of the coating and roughness of the substrate play a crucial role in the effectiveness of EBCs.

Development of oxide-based High temperature environmental barrier coatings for ceramic matrix composites via the slurry process

Kang N. Lee et al.

Summary: An advanced environmental barrier coating (EBC) for SiC based composites was developed using a slurry process, with Yb2Si2O7 and mullite chosen as base materials for the bond coat. Various sintering aids enabled sintering at high temperatures, and the coatings showed good oxidation resistance and stability in steam oxidation tests. Additionally, kinetic analysis revealed that oxidant permeation through the silica scale is the rate controlling factor for TGO growth rates.

Correlation of Process Conditions, Porosity Levels and Crystallinity in Atmospherically Plasma Sprayed Yb2Si2O7 Environmental Barrier Coatings

Robert Vassen et al.

Summary: Environmental barrier coatings are essential for protecting fiber reinforced ceramics in hot gas environments typically found in gas turbines. Yb2Si2O7 is a common material used for SiC/SiC composites protection, but achieving low porosity and high crystallinity levels during atmospheric plasma spraying can be challenging. This study compares coatings prepared using a high velocity APS process with more conventional methods, focusing on the influence of topcoat density on silica scale growth on the silicon bond coat after heat treatment at 1300 degrees C for 100 hours.

In-flight particle states and coating properties of air plasma sprayed ytterbium disilicates

Dianying Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing plasma enthalpy increases in-flight particle temperature, affecting the phase composition and durability of the coatings. Additionally, an increase in Yb2SiO5 phase content results in higher thermal expansion coefficient and significant impact on the durability of EBC coatings.

Thermal Cycling Behavior of Air Plasma-Sprayed and Low-Pressure Plasma-Sprayed Environmental Barrier Coatings

Dianying Chen et al.

Summary: Yb2Si2O7/Si environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) produced by low-pressure plasma spray (LPPS) exhibit superior durability compared to those produced by air plasma spray (APS) due to significantly reduced thermally grown oxide (TGO) growth rate, denser and crack-free microstructure, higher bonding strength, and reduced coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch in LPPS EBCs.
