Does a coffee plantation host potential pollinators when it is not flowering? Bee distribution in an agricultural landscape with high biological diversity in the BrazilianCampo Rupestre

Ana Carolina Pereira Machado et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of maintaining native vegetation in agricultural landscapes for bee distribution and reproduction. While richness and abundance of bee species vary among different seasons and vegetation types, the composition of bee communities is more dependent on seasonality and vegetation types.

Quality and inequality: creating value worlds with Third Wave coffee

Edward F. Fischer

Summary: This article examines how economic gains are extracted by translating values across symbolic and material worlds in the burgeoning high-end coffee market in the USA and among Maya farmers in Guatemala. It shows how the development of a new lexicon of quality tied to narratives of provenance and exclusivity has disadvantages for smallholding coffee farmers, perpetuating dependency patterns of global capital accumulation.
