Rate-dependent adhesion of viscoelastic contacts, Part I: Contact area and contact line velocity within model randomly rough surfaces

G. Violano et al.

Summary: In this study, dissipative effects during the detachment of a smooth spherical glass probe from a viscoelastic silicone substrate patterned with micro-asperities were investigated using experiments and modeling. The results show that scaling laws for contact radius and contact line velocity can be established through pull-off experiments on substrates with different height distributions of micro-asperities.

Rate-dependent adhesion of viscoelastic contacts. Part II: Numerical model and hysteresis dissipation

G. Violano et al.

Summary: The numerical model proposed in this paper describes the adhesive normal contact between a glass spherical indenter and a viscoelastic model rough substrate of PDMS material, taking into account dissipative processes and localized viscoelastic losses at contact lines. The model successfully explains the strong adhesion hysteresis observed in experimental measurements, which is mainly attributed to viscous dissipation occurring during pull-off. The detachment force is found to be influenced by the detachment rate and roughness amplitude, rather than by the maximum load from which unloading starts.

Summary: This study investigates energy dissipation and stress field changes during crack propagation in viscoelastic solids, revealing that a simple theory can yield results similar to those based on the stress field theory. It also explores different types of crack propagation scenarios.

Roughness-Induced Adhesive Hysteresis in Self-Affine Fractal Surfaces

Guido Violano et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of surface roughness parameters on adhesive hysteresis loss, finding that energy loss increases linearly with true contact area while detachment force is minimally influenced by maximum applied load. Hysteresis losses decrease with increasing fractal dimension and cut-off frequency of roughness, suggesting shorter wavelengths impact adhesive hysteresis.
