Mechanics of unusual soft network materials with rotatable structural nodes

Jianxing Liu et al.

Summary: Soft network materials with filamentary horseshoe microstructures are of practical interest in flexible, bio-integrated electronics due to their ability to accurately reproduce nonlinear stress-strain responses of biological tissues. Previous studies mainly focused on mechanical responses before fracture, while neglecting utmost strength and stretchability. This paper presents a novel type of soft network materials with rotatable lattice nodes to enhance deformability.

Gaussian-preserved, non-volatile shape morphing in three-dimensional microstructures for dual-functional electronic devices

Ziao Tian et al.

Summary: The study introduces a Gaussian-preserved shape-morphing system for ultrafast shape morphing and non-volatile reconfiguration to develop dual-functional electronic devices at the microscale. This system allows transformation triggered by mechanical or thermal stimuli within a microsecond, and preserves non-volatile configuration during shape morphing process.

Nonlinear compressive deformations of buckled 3D ribbon mesostructures

Xu Cheng et al.

Summary: This paper systematically investigates the nonlinear compressive deformations and mode transitions of bridge-shaped and helical mesostructures assembled through controlled lateral buckling. A finite deformation model is developed based on the elastica theory, validated by experiments and FEA. Five distinct deformation modes could possibly occur during the compression of helical mesostructures, with mode transitions mainly arising from downward collapse in the middle or side region of the mesostructure. These results provide design guidelines for the development of 3D flexible electronic devices, especially for biointegrated applications.

Summary: Vibration-based methods are effective for characterizing physical properties of biological materials, especially the mechanics of living cells. By utilizing mechanics-guided techniques, tunable vibrational structures can be used to simultaneously determine mass and modulus of cells and other biological materials, providing insights for research in biomechanics and dynamic biological processes.
