Increased efficiency gyroid structures by tailored material distribution

David Downing et al.

Summary: The study found that under uniaxial loading, loads predominantly distribute within helical substructures of the solid-surface gyroid, and the mechanical response can be tuned by adjusting the thickness of the load-carrying helical regions. This novel discovery enables more efficient use of material distribution.

Influence of structure-determining parameters on the mechanical properties and damage behavior of electron beam melted lattice structures under quasi-static and fatigue compression loading

W. Radlof et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanical properties and damage behavior of additively manufactured porous structures under quasi-static and fatigue compression tests, considering different designs and structure determining parameters. Both global layer-by-layer damage behavior and ductile local damage behavior were observed. Cube porous structures mainly failed in the high cycle fatigue regime during fatigue compression loading.

Compressive anisotropy of sheet and strut based porous Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds

Helena Barber et al.

Summary: This study found that sheet-based triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) scaffolds outperformed strut-based structures in terms of mechanical properties, with higher compressive strength and yield strength. All three topologies exhibited orientational dependence in mechanical properties, with the strut-based architecture showing a higher degree of anisotropy.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing is now a mature technology that is being used to produce high-performance parts, including mission-critical components. The intentional design of porous metal structures, such as cellular or lattice structures, offers advantages in terms of specific mechanical or performance characteristics. While concerns over structural integrity remain, improvements in the manufacturing processes are leading to better fatigue properties for additively manufactured cellular structures.

Different Approaches for Manufacturing Ti-6Al-4V Alloy with Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Sheet-Based Structures by Electron Beam Melting

Dmitriy Khrapov et al.

Summary: Through Electron Beam Melting, Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) gyroid sheet-based structures were successfully manufactured for the first time, with inputted zero and 200 μm wall thicknesses. Mechanical properties of the structures under different production Themes were investigated and found to be similar. Finite element simulations demonstrated that gyroids manufactured in different Themes can effectively mimic the mechanical properties of bones.
