Circular recycling of polyester textile waste using a sustainable catalyst

Zengwei Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of circular recycling of polyester textile waste through a glycolysis process using environmentally friendly Mg-Al double oxides pellets as catalyst. The results show that the pellet catalysts can be cycled three times without losing structural integrity or catalytic activity, producing regenerated PET with comparable quality to virgin PET fibers.

S. Ghorbantabar et al.

Summary: In this study, PET waste was depolymerized through aminolysis using excess amount of monoethanolamine, resulting in BHETA as the main product. The reaction conversion was calculated using various methods and it was found that TGA and DSC are suitable for this purpose. Glycolysis of Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) Using Biomass-Waste Derived Recyclable Heterogeneous Catalyst

Samson Lalhmangaihzuala et al.

Summary: In this study, a biomass-waste-derived heterogeneous catalyst was prepared from waste orange peel for the depolymerisation of PET to its monomer, BHET. The catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance, depolymerising PET within 90 minutes and producing 79% recrystallised BHET. The ability to reuse the catalyst for multiple cycles without significant loss of activity and its environmentally-friendly nature make it a promising green route for PET recycling.

Hossein Abedsoltan et al.

Summary: Poly (4-styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA) was utilized as a recoverable acid catalyst for hydrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG). The PSSA system exhibited faster hydrolysis kinetics than H2SO4 with better surface wetting of PET and higher localized concentration of protons. Reutilization and titration results indicated that PSSA maintained activity after five reaction cycles.

Summary: This study synthesized a series of Hmim halometallates as catalysts for PET degradation, revealing a synergistic effect in the mixture of [Hmim]ZnCl3 and [Hmim]CoCl3 to increase the yield of BHET product. While [Hmim]ZnCl3 exhibited higher catalytic activity in the chain scission stage, it also resulted in more by-products. The glycolysis synergy stemmed from the balance between the high reactivity of [Hmim]ZnCl3 and the high selectivity of [Hmim]CoCl3.
