A rheological approach to studying process-induced structural evolution of the microporous layer in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Shirin Mehrazi et al.

Summary: The relationship between the primary agglomerate structure in the ink and the morphological and surface properties of the dried layer is studied based on rheological properties. Samples with higher PTFE loading have a more inhomogeneous microstructure and form highly percolated agglomerates after coating. The microporous layer with a solid content of 10 wt.% and a PTFE loading of 25 wt.% is found to have an optimal morphology for oxygen transport under both dry and wet conditions. This study provides new insight into the optimization of microporous layer design and development.

Catalytic layer-membrane electrode assembly methods for optimum triple phase boundaries and fuel cell performances

Imen Fouzai et al.

Summary: Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), designed for mobility applications, require a delicate balance in electrode formation with a key focus on the triple phase boundary (TPB). Current research aims to replace Pt with non-noble metals or reduce Pt loading, while optimizing TPB structure. Emerging technologies like print-light synthesis are explored for catalyst deposition and nanostructure formation.
