Comparison of Exogenous Ketone Administration Versus Dietary Carbohydrate Restriction on Myocardial Glucose Suppression: A Crossover Clinical Trial

Senthil Selvaraj et al.

Summary: This study examines whether exogenous ketone administration is noninferior to the ketogenic diet in achieving myocardial glucose suppression and whether serum beta-hydroxybutyrate levels can predict this suppression. The results suggest that exogenous ketones are less effective than the ketogenic diet, while serum BHB levels can predict myocardial glucose suppression.

Therapeutic Potential of Ketone Bodies for Patients With Cardiovascular Disease JACC State-of-the-Art Review

Salva R. Yurista et al.

Summary: Metabolic perturbations are at the core of various cardiovascular diseases, and ketones have been shown to have protective effects in these conditions. Apart from providing additional fuel for the heart, ketone bodies also influence a variety of cellular processes, potentially contributing to cardiovascular benefits.

Myocardial ketone body utilization in patients with heart failure: The impact of oral ketone ester

Luca Monzo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the maximal ketone body utilization capacity and its determinants in controls and patients with moderate HF and reduced ejection fraction. The results showed that patients with HFrEF had a higher ability to utilize ketones compared to controls, and this enhancement correlated with the degree of cardiac dysfunction and remodeling.
