Predicting ion mobility as a function of the electric field for small ions in light gases

Viraj D. Gandhi et al.

Summary: High-resolution mobility devices such as FAIMS and DMS use strong electric fields to separate ions in the gas phase based on the gas concentration ratio E/N. However, the relation between mobility K and E/N shows non-linear, ion-dependent behavior that is difficult to characterize. By utilizing a two-temperature theory, it is possible to closely follow the K - E/N behavior numerically, and optimizing the Lennard-Jones potentials can improve the accuracy of calculations.

Summary: Since the 1980s, D-amino acid-containing peptides (DAACPs) have been discovered in animals, showing tremendous functional specificity at extremely low levels. The introduction of the new technique differential IMS (FAIMS) has successfully separated all 18 pairs of epimer species, showcasing a 2.5X resolution increase compared to trapped IMS.

UVPD Spectroscopy of Differential Mobility-Selected Prototropic Isomers of Rivaroxaban

Nour Mashmoushi et al.

Summary: Two ion populations of protonated Rivaroxaban are separated using differential mobility spectrometry under different conditions, showing similarities in CID behavior but distinct prototropic isomers based on UVPD spectra. The populations are attributed to bare protonated Rivaroxaban and to complexes with ammonia or acetonitrile, which dissociate prior to mass selection. Comparisons with computed spectra suggest proton sharing between distal oxygen centers in the identified prototropic isomers.

Summary: Ion mobility spectrometry separates ions based on their motion through a drift tube with an electric field, affected by factors like chemical dynamics and physical parameters. High kinetic energy IMS involves a reduced electric field strength, impacting ion mobility, with numerical simulations playing a key role in understanding and validating experimental observations.

Electronic spectroscopy of differential mobility-selected prototropic isomers of protonated para-aminobenzoic acid

Neville J. A. Coughlan et al.

Summary: PABA was electrosprayed from mixtures of protic and aprotic solvents, resulting in the formation of two prototropic isomers in the gas phase, with their relative populations depending on the composition of the electrospray solvent. Differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) was used to separate the two ion populations in the gas phase, showing that the N-protonated isomer had a more negative CV shift than the O-protonated isomer. The study also demonstrated that CCSD vertical excitation energies and vertical gradient Franck-Condon simulations provided near-quantitative agreement with the measured spectral features, supporting the spectral assignments.

UVPD spectroscopy of differential mobility-selected prototropic isomers of protonated adenine

Fiorella Villanueva Heldmaier et al.

Summary: Two prototropic isomers of adenine were analyzed using a combination of a differential mobility spectrometer, mass spectrometer, and photodissociation method, resulting in the determination of action spectra for each isomer. The study successfully assigned the two signals in the measured ionograms to specific tautomers through analysis of the action spectra, calculated vibronic spectra, and thermochemical data.

Predicting differential ion mobility behaviour in silico using machine learning

Christian Ieritano et al.

Summary: A machine learning approach was used to predict compensation voltages for ion transmission in differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) using a database of 409 cationic analytes, achieving a high level of prediction accuracy. By including lower separation voltages in the model, accuracy was further improved, especially in capturing different behavior types of ions.
