A Report of Information Technology and Health Deficiencies in US Nursing Homes

Trends in antibiotics use among long-term US nursing-home residents

Summary: This study aimed to describe antibiotic use among nursing-home residents from 2012 to 2016. The findings showed that overall antibiotic use did not change, but there was an increase in antibiotic use among assessments with infections, urinary tract infections, and no infection. Higher antibiotic use among infected residents with advanced cognitive impairment is concerning and further efforts are needed to promote antibiotic stewardship in nursing homes.
