Mechanochemical synthesis of an elusive fluorinated polyacetylene

Benjamin R. Boswell et al.

Summary: Fluorinated polyacetylene, a long-sought-after air-stable polymer, has been successfully synthesized through a mechanochemical unzipping strategy. Polymer mechanochemistry is a valuable tool for accessing new materials on a preparative scale, especially those inaccessible by other means. This work demonstrates the potential of polymer mechanochemistry in the scalable synthesis of novel materials.

Distal conformational locks on ferrocene mechanophores guide reaction pathways for increased mechanochemical reactivity

Yudi Zhang et al.

Summary: Metallocenes are attractive mechanophores due to their stability in the absence of force but reactivity under tension. Covalently bridging the cyclopentadienyl ligands of ferrocenes in a polymer alters their mechanochemical reactivity, leading to faster dissociation through a peeling mechanism. Distal attachments can restrict dissociation mechanism to peeling, increasing dissociation rate constant by several orders of magnitude.

Substituent Effects in Mechanochemical Allowed and Forbidden Cyclobutene Ring-Opening Reactions

Cameron L. Brown et al.

Summary: Woodward and Hoffman once joked about a Maxwell demon that could open a molecule of cyclobutene in a disrotatory fashion. Nearly 40 years later, this concept was realized in the field of covalent polymer mechanochemistry. By combining single-molecule force spectroscopy and computation, the study explored substituent effects in ring-opening reactions of cyclobutene and benzocyclobutene, revealing differences in the forces required for allowed and forbidden reactions.

Enhancement of Mechanophore Activation in Mechanochromic Dendrimers by Functionalization of Their Surface

Takuma Watabe et al.

Summary: The reactivity of dendrimers with mechanochromic cores is significantly enhanced after surface functionalization, particularly in higher-generation MDs with hydrogen-bonding amide groups. Additionally, the efficiency of transmission of the grinding force to the mechanochromic core is influenced by chain overlap, molecular size, and polarity.

Fast, reversible mechanochromism of regioisomeric oxazine mechanophores: Developing in situ responsive force probes for polymeric materials

Hai Qian et al.

Summary: A new family of mechanophores based on the oxazine (OX) structural motif was developed to address issues of hysteretic or irreversible mechanochromism found in most bond-scission-based mechanophores. The OX mechanophores exhibit faster and reversible mechanochromism without any sign of fatigue when compared with other mechanophores. Constrained DFT simulations correlated the experimental findings to molecular scale events, providing deeper understanding to a broad range of soft materials by in situ monitoring the local mechanics.

Mechanochemical Release of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes from Flex-Activated Mechanophores

Hang Shen et al.

Summary: A new flex-activated mechanophore has been discovered, which releases an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) under mechanical load. This design demonstrates a promising first step towards flex-activated designs with downstream reactivities, allowing for iterative activation increases in the material through non-destructive compression cycles. The potential modularity of the mechanophore design is highlighted by the demonstration of two different NHC structures.

Generation of an Elusive Permanent Merocyanine via a Unique Mechanochemical Reaction Pathway

Molly E. McFadden et al.

Summary: The discovery of a 2H-naphtho[1,2-b]pyran mechanophore that produces a permanent merocyanine dye upon mechanochemical activation is reported. The irreversible nature of the mechanically generated merocyanine is attributed to a unique reaction involving the scission of an ester C-O bond. This permanent coloration offers new opportunities for sensing, force-recording applications, and fundamental studies.

Single-Event Spectroscopy and Unravelling Kinetics of Covalent Domains Based on Cyclobutane Mechanophores

Brandon H. Bowser et al.

Summary: This study reports the force-dependent kinetics of stored length release in a family of covalent domain polymers based on cis-1,2-substituted cyclobutane mechanophores. By replacing a methylene in the pulling attachment with a phenyl group, the force necessary to achieve rate constants is significantly lowered. The kinetics are negligibly perturbed by changes in the amount of stored length, providing promise for applications in probing molecular behavior in polymer networks and optimizing materials made from covalent domain polymers.

Mechanically Responsive Luminescent Polymers Based on Supramolecular Cyclophane Mechanophores

Yoshimitsu Sagara et al.

Summary: A new approach to cyclophane-based supramolecular mechanophores is introduced in this study. The mechanically responsive cyclic motif shows a noticeable change in emission color upon deformation, indicating a suppression of excimer-promoting interactions between luminophores. The research suggests that cyclophanes have the potential for developing various supramolecular mechanophores for detecting and visualizing weak forces in polymeric materials or living tissues.

Near-Infrared-II Cyanine/Polymethine Dyes, Current State and Perspective

Yijing Du et al.

Summary: The development of NIR-II fluorescence imaging has enabled real-time detection of biological cells, tissues, and the body, but current NIR-II fluorophores face challenges in emission wavelength control and quantum yield. Cyanine dyes have shown promise as ideal NIR-II fluorophores with tunable emission and brightness, but a simpler and faster synthesis method is still needed. Further research is needed to explore NIR-II dyes with longer wavelengths and improved stability for potential clinical applications.

Fast reversible isomerization of merocyanine as a tool to quantify stress history in elastomers

Yinjun Chen et al.

Summary: A mechanochemistry based approach using Spiropyran (SP) as a force sensitive molecular probe in multiple network elastomers (MNE) is proposed to detect and map stress history during dynamic processes. The color changes from Spiropyran to Merocyanine and subsequent reversible isomerization of Merocyanine provide insights into the stress experienced by the material. The color changes can be used to accurately map stress history during loading and unloading processes, showing excellent agreement with finite element simulations on fractured samples.
