Chiral Photocatalyst Structures in Asymmetric Photochemical Synthesis

Matthew J. Genzink et al.

Summary: Asymmetric photocatalysis is a major research topic in contemporary synthetic organic chemistry. However, the discovery of general strategies for highly enantioselective photochemical reactions has been a recent development, leading to a somewhat limited variety of stereocontrolled photoreactions. This review summarizes the chiral catalyst structures that have been studied for solution-phase asymmetric photochemistry, providing insight into the logic required for highly effective stereocontrolled photocatalysis.

Stereoinduction in Metallaphotoredox Catalysis

Alexander Lipp et al.

Summary: Metallaphotoredox catalysis has become a crucial platform for constructing C(sp(3))-hybridized centers under mild conditions. Recent research has focused on understanding stereoinduction in dual catalytic processes, with Ni and Cu-catalyzed transformations playing a predominant role. Enantioselective bond formations enabled by Ni and Cu-catalysis have seen significant progress, along with discussions on stereochemical control in diastereoselective transformations.

Quaternary stereocentres via catalytic enantioconvergent nucleophilic substitution reactions of tertiary alkyl halides

Zhaobin Wang et al.

Summary: The development of efficient methods, particularly catalytic and enantioselective processes, for the construction of all-carbon quaternary stereocentres is an important and difficult challenge in organic synthesis. A nickel-based chiral catalyst has been shown to achieve enantioconvergent couplings of tertiary electrophiles with alkenylmetal nucleophiles, providing access to a variety of organic compounds with good yield and enantioselectivity. This approach offers a potentially versatile strategy for the synthesis of complex molecules, including natural product intermediates.

Enantioselective Formation of Quaternary Centers by Allylic Alkylation with First-Row Transition-Metal Catalysts

Lars Susse et al.

Summary: Asymmetric allylic alkylation using transition metals offers an efficient strategy for generating quaternary stereocenters. Recent advancements have shown the potential of first-row transition metals as a cost-effective and potentially equally efficient alternative. This review highlights the use of different transition metals for catalyzing reactions with nucleophiles to assemble quaternary stereocenters.

Visible-Light-Induced Catalyst-Free Carboxylation of Acylsilanes with Carbon Dioxide

Zhengning Fan et al.

Summary: Intermolecular carbon-carbon bond formation between acylsilanes and carbon dioxide was achieved through photoirradiation without a catalyst. Siloxycarbenes generated from acylsilanes added to the C=O bond of CO2, leading to the synthesis of alpha-ketocarboxylic derivatives. Control experiments show that the siloxycarbene likely comes from the singlet state of the acylsilane and the addition to CO2 is not concerted.

Catalytic asymmetric C-C cross-couplings enabled by photoexcitation

Giacomo E. M. Crisenza et al.

Summary: Enantioselective catalytic processes can be achieved by using visible light to alter the reactivity of chiral iridium complexes, enabling new mechanistic pathways. Photoexcitation induces a redox event that unlocks difficult-to-realize reactions, such as enantioselective alkyl-alkyl cross-coupling between allylic alcohols and radical precursors.
