Topological superconductivity and Majorana states in low-dimensional systems

V. V. Val'kov et al.

Summary: We discuss the properties and conditions for the realization of topologically nontrivial superconducting phases in condensed matter. We also explore the criteria and experimental methods for identifying Majorana bound states (MBSs) and discuss various models where MBSs are realized. The transport characteristics of devices containing topologically nontrivial materials are analyzed, and the conductance of an Aharonov-Bohm ring connected by a superconducting nanowire (SW) is studied in detail. We also investigate the occurrence of MBSs in the coexistence phase of chiral d + id superconductivity and 120-degree spin ordering.

Zero-bias peaks at zero magnetic field in ferromagnetic hybrid nanowires

S. Vaitiekenas et al.

Summary: Hybrid quantum materials can create quantum phases that do not exist in nature, such as a one-dimensional topological superconductor with Majorana states bound to its ends by coupling a semiconductor nanowire to a superconductor in the presence of a strong magnetic field. However, applied magnetic fields are detrimental to superconductivity and constrain device layout, components, materials, fabrication, and operation.

Beyond skyrmions: Review and perspectives of alternative magnetic quasiparticles

Boerge Goebel et al.

Summary: Magnetic skyrmions have attracted significant research interest since their discovery a decade ago, due to their non-trivial real-space topology and potential technological applications. However, the utilization of skyrmions in spintronic devices has not been achieved yet, mainly because of shortcomings in their current-driven motion. Additionally, beyond skyrmions, there are emerging trends in the field of topological spin textures.

Topological superconductivity in skyrmion lattices

Eric Mascot et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates the unprecedented ability to control the emergence of topological phases by changing the skyrmion radius in two-dimensional MSH systems containing a magnetic skyrmion lattice. Josephson scanning tunneling spectroscopy spatially visualizes the induced spin-triplet correlations, a crucial aspect underlying the emergence of topological superconductivity in these systems.

Skyrmion-(Anti)Vortex Coupling in a Chiral Magnet-Superconductor Heterostructure

A. P. Petrovic et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the experimental coupling of chiral magnetism and superconductivity in [IrFeCoPt]/Nb heterostructures, showing the induction of antivortices by the stray field of skyrmions and the unique signatures in magnetization, critical current, and flux dynamics. Furthermore, a thermally tunable Rashba-Edelstein exchange coupling was observed in the isolated skyrmion phase, indicating a path towards controllable topological hybrid materials that have not been achieved to date.

Observing the Suppression of Superconductivity in RbEuFe4As4 by Correlated Magnetic Fluctuations

D. Collomb et al.

Summary: Quantitative magnetic imaging of superconducting vortices in RbEuFe4As4 showed a pronounced suppression of superfluid density near the magnetic ordering temperature, indicating a significant exchange interaction between the superconducting and magnetic subsystems. This has important implications for future investigations of physical phenomena arising from the interplay between them.

Skyrmion control of Majorana states in planar Josephson junctions

Narayan Mohanta et al.

Summary: Researchers propose a setup combining a Josephson junction and a skyrmion crystal to create and control Majorana bound states, highlighting the additional phase tunability of planar Josephson junctions for generating Majorana bound states. The externally tunable skyrmion radius brings a unique control feature for the Majorana bound states, demonstrating promising possibilities for manipulating topological superconductivity.

Interaction of a Neel-type skyrmion with a superconducting vortex

E. S. Andriyakhina et al.

Summary: The interaction between vortices and skyrmions in superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures reveals new phenomena, such as the energetically favorable positioning of a Pearl vortex at a nonzero distance from the center of a Neel-type skyrmion. The presence of a vortex-antivortex pair is found to increase the skyrmion radius, and spontaneous generation of a vortex-antivortex pair is predicted under certain conditions in the presence of a Neel-type skyrmion.

Electronic structure and coexistence of superconductivity with magnetism in RbEuFe4As4

T. K. Kim et al.

Summary: In the stoichiometric iron-based material RbEuFe4As4, superconductivity and a peculiar long-range magnetic order of Eu 4f states coexist. The complex three-dimensional electronic structure was revealed using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and multiple superconducting gaps were measured on various sheets of the Fermi surface. High-resolution resonant photoemission spectroscopy revealed the magnetic order of the Eu 4f states.

Tunable Majorana corner modes in noncentrosymmetric superconductors: Tunneling spectroscopy and edge imperfections

S. Ikegaya et al.

Summary: Majorana corner modes in two-dimensional (s + p)-wave superconductors can be manipulated by the direction of an in-plane magnetic field, while edge imperfections affect their number and controllability. Tunneling spectroscopy shows distinct periodicity of zero-bias differential conductance with respect to the magnetic field direction in the presence of Majorana corner modes in this setup.

Faithful derivation of symmetry indicators: A case study for topological superconductors with time-reversal and inversion symmetries

Sheng-Jie Huang et al.

Summary: The study proposes a protocol for predicting boundary features using symmetry indicators, combining topological crystal classification in real space and equivariant K-group analysis in momentum space. By systematically matching bases, clear bulk-boundary correspondence indicators are obtained. The protocol is demonstrated using a two-dimensional time-reversal odd-parity superconductor example, showing its applicability for predicting materials with various boundary features in topological crystalline superconductors.

Spontaneous Currents and Topologically Protected States in Superconducting Hybrid Structures with the Spin-Orbit Coupling (Brief Review)

A. Samokhvalov et al.

Summary: Recent theoretical studies have reported on the features of superconducting states in hybrid structures influenced by spin-orbit effects, with phenomena such as the generation of spontaneous currents and the appearance of topologically nontrivial superconducting phases. It has been shown that spin-orbit coupling can enable new inhomogeneous phase structures, including phase batteries, and the effects of geometric factors on topologically nontrivial superconducting states have been analyzed. Additionally, new types of topological transitions in vortex states of Majorana wires have been proposed.

Magnetic skyrmion binning

Summary: In this study, the impact of spin-polarized electrons flowing through a magnetic texture on skyrmions in thin ferromagnetic films was examined. Through micromagnetic simulations and analysis using the Thiele equation, the potential for mechanically sorting skyrmions by their topological degree was explored. The research showed the potential for skyrmions and skyrmion bags to move in different directions under a constant current, which has significant implications for technical applications.

Rotational symmetry breaking and partial Majorana corner states in a heterostructure based on high-Tc superconductors

Yu-Xuan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a microscopic model was used to re-examine the phenomenon of higher-order topological superconductivity in a heterostructure with a two-dimensional topological insulator and a high-temperature superconductor. The symmetries of the quasiparticle energy spectra were found to be significantly different from previous results, with localized edge states appearing at only one boundary in a cylinder geometry. The asymmetrical results were attributed to exploring the pairing order parameter and the anomalous Green's function.
