Detachment fold duplexes within gravity-driven fold and thrust systems

Summary: In this study, the formation of fold duplexes in a gravity-driven fold and thrust system developed within late-Pleistocene mass transport deposits around the Dead Sea Basin is described. The study reveals the evolution of thrust ramps, initiation of buckling, and displacement transfer mechanisms within the system. The observation that displacement migrates to new upper detachments and the creation of new upper detachments at higher stratigraphic levels are the key differences between orogenic fold duplexes and surface gravity-driven fold duplexes.

Liquefaction and re-liquefaction of sediments induced by uneven loading and glacigenic earthquakes: Implications of results from the Latvian Baltic Sea coast

Summary: This study identified seven internally-deformed layers in shallow marine bay sediments along the Latvian Baltic Sea coast bluff at Baltmuiza, deposited during mid Marine Isotope Stage 2. Detailed sedimentological analyses revealed that liquefaction was responsible for soft-sediment deformation structures. Traces of both initial liquefaction and re-liquefaction were found in at least four of the seven layers with SSDS, suggesting that sediment re-liquefaction caused by an allogenic trigger is still possible under favorable conditions.
