Plastic contamination of forest, urban, and agricultural soils: a case study of Yeoju City in the Republic of Korea

Yu Ri Choi et al.

Summary: Microplastics were found in forest, urban, and agricultural soils in Yeoju City, with the highest abundance in roadside soils (1108 pieces kg(-1)). Polyethylene and polypropylene were identified in upland, greenhouse, and orchard soils, while styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) fragments were found in all farmland soils. The study highlights the significant contamination of soil by microplastics, with differences in abundance and distribution based on land use types.

Microplastic abundance, distribution, and composition in the surface water and sediments of the Yangtze River along Chongqing City, China

Jianxin Fan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the abundance and distribution of microplastics in the Yangtze River along Chongqing City, finding that microplastics were prevalent, with fibers and films being the dominant forms. Polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, high-density polyethylene, polyester, and wool fibers were identified as the primary polymer types present.

Study of Microplastics and Inorganic Contaminants in Mussels from the Montenegrin Coast, Adriatic Sea

Sara De Simone et al.

Summary: This study analyzed mussels collected at three locations in Boka Kotorska Bay on the Montenegrin Adriatic coast for microplastics and other emerging contaminants in their soft tissues using optical and Raman microscopy. Additionally, concentrations of six trace metals were measured in the same samples using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results showed that mussels near urban areas contained the highest levels of microplastics and pollutants from anthropogenic sources, while farmed mussels had higher carotenoid and nylon content. The simultaneous analysis of different contaminants in mussels may be a significant advancement in marine pollution monitoring and assessing human health risks associated with consuming contaminated seafood.

Microplastics in Surface Sediments along the Montenegrin Coast, Adriatic Sea: Types, Occurrence, and Distribution

Neda Boskovic et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the presence and characteristics of microplastics in surface sediment along the Montenegrin coast, revealing their widespread distribution and variety in polymer types, shape types, and colors. The results showed that the area is moderately to highly polluted with microplastics, with polypropylene, polyethylene, and acrylate copolymer being the dominant polymer types and filaments being the most common shape type.
