Sulphate in freshwater ecosystems: A review of sources, biogeochemical cycles, ecotoxicological effects and bioremediation

Dominik Zak et al.

Summary: Sulphate concentrations in freshwater have been increasing globally over the past few decades, but the extent of its impact on ecosystems remains poorly understood. Sources of sulphate pollution include natural processes like weathering and anthropogenic activities such as mining and agriculture, affecting biogeochemical processes and potentially harming aquatic organisms and human health. Solutions such as bioremediation systems and wetland restoration may help mitigate these impacts.

Ferric iron stimulation in marine SMFCs: Impact on the microbial structure evolution in contaminated sediments with low and high molecular weight PAHs

Hamdan Z. Hamdan et al.

Summary: The study found that stimulation with ferric iron can increase the relative abundance of exoelectrogenic iron-reducing bacteria in marine sediment microbial fuel cells, facilitating the biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Additionally, removal efficiency significantly improved in the presence of ferric iron stimulation and inhibition of sulfate reducing bacteria, particularly for persistent PAHs such as benzo(a)pyrene.

An evolving view on biogeochemical cycling of iron

Andreas Kappler et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of iron plays a crucial role in environmental processes such as ocean productivity, carbon storage, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient and contaminant fate. Recent studies have uncovered novel processes in the biogeochemical iron cycle and shown that oxidation and reduction of iron occur cyclically or simultaneously in many environments.

Summary: Adding Fe(III)-P to sediments under anoxic conditions can promote the formation of vivianite, while the microbial community composition remained unchanged in Fe-rich sediments and changed significantly in Fe-poor sediments.
