Molecularly imprinted polymers in miniaturized extraction and separation devices

Thomas Bouvarel et al.

Summary: This review discusses the latest developments in miniaturization of molecularly imprinted polymers to meet the societal demand for reliable, fast, affordable, and solvent/sample saving analyses. Different polymerization routes for producing miniaturized molecularly imprinted polymers in capillaries or chip channels are investigated, along with their potential applications in various separation techniques.

A stationary pseudophase semi-permanent coating for open-tubular capillary liquid chromatography and electrochromatography

Mohamed Adel Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study described the chromatographic and electrochromatographic separation of small neutral and charged analytes using a fused silica capillary with a stationary pseudophase semi-permanent coating of DDAB aggregates. The research showed the formation of DDAB patchy admicelle, complete admicelle, or larger aggregates inside the capillary, depending on the concentration of DDAB used in coating. Overall, the use of a stationary pseudophase coating provides a potentially easier alternative way to conduct open-tubular liquid chromatography and electrochromatography.

An overview of open tubular liquid chromatography with a focus on the coupling with mass spectrometry for the analysis of small molecules

Deyber Arley Vargas Medina et al.

Summary: Open tubular liquid chromatography (OT-LC) offers superior chromatographic performance and more favorable mass spectrometry detection conditions, particularly when coupled with electrospray ionization sources (ESI). OT-LC-MS is mainly utilized in proteomics and biosciences analysis, but can also provide enhanced sensitivity and superior chromatographic performance in analyzing small molecules.

Enantioseparation of mandelic acid and substituted derivatives by high-performance liquid chromatography with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin as chiral mobile additive and evaluation of inclusion complexes by molecular dynamics

Jie-Hua Shi et al.

Summary: The enantioseparation and resolution mechanism of mandelic acid, 4-methoxymandelic acid, and 4-propoxymandelic acid were investigated using HPLC and molecular dynamics simulation with 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin as an additive. The results showed that van der Waals forces and hydrogen-bonding interactions drove the separation, and the binding energy of the HP-beta-CD with the (S)-isomer was higher than with the (R)-isomer. Molecular dynamics simulation was found to have predictive function for chiral resolution based on the binding energies and separation factors.

Preparation of a polydopamine/β-cyclodextrin coated open tubular capillary electrochromatography column and application for enantioseparation of five proton pump inhibitors

Xiuyu Sui et al.

Summary: An open tubular capillary electrochromatography column was prepared by immobilizing beta-cyclodextrin on the inner wall of the capillary via noncovalent adsorption of polydopamine. The column showed good chiral separation performance towards five proton pump inhibitors and was robustly validated. The polydopamine/beta-cyclodextrin coated capillary column demonstrated stability and efficiency over 100 successive runs.

Enantioseparation of phenethylamines by using high-performance liquid chromatography column permanently coated with methylated β-cyclodextrin

Hiroyuki Terashima et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated successful separation of enantiomers of four phenethylamines simultaneously using a phenyl column coated with methylated beta-cyclodextrin in chiral high-performance liquid chromatography. The enantioseparation ability remained effective during successive analyses within a week. The higher stability of the methylated beta-cyclodextrin complexes with (S)-enantiomers explains the longer retention time in high-performance liquid chromatography.
