Glyphosate adsorption onto kaolinite and kaolinite-humic acid composites: Experimental and molecular dynamics studies

Fayang Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular interactions between glyphosate and kaolinite and kaolinite-humic acid complexes. The results showed that kaolinite-humic acid complexes adsorb higher concentrations of glyphosate than kaolinite alone due to more adsorption sites and hydrogen bonding interactions present. Molecular dynamics simulations further demonstrated that glyphosate molecules adsorb parallel to the surface of kaolinite and the composites through hydrogen bonding, with humic acid facilitating the adsorption through the creation of H-bond networks.

Uranium retention on iron oxyhydroxides in post-mining environmental conditions

Florian Lahrouch et al.

Summary: Investigating uranium migration mechanisms related to the weathering of waste rocks is crucial for addressing potential environmental issues caused by uranium mining. This study showed the important role of iron oxyhydroxides in immobilizing and concentrating uranium, with uranyl ternary surface complexes identified at the ferrihydrite surface. Additionally, goethite and lepidocrocite were found to be secondary traps for U immobilization.

Red mud for the efficient adsorption of U(VI) from aqueous solution: Influence of calcination on performance and mechanism

Wanying Wu et al.

Summary: This study produced macroporous iron and carbon combined calcined red mud (ICRM) and carbon calcined red mud (CRM) through calcination in the range of 500-800 degrees C, revealing advantageous performances with stable U adsorption capacities. The main adsorption mechanisms of ICRM are surface electrostatic attraction, physical adsorption by porous structure, and chemical adsorption by active Al and Fe components. Overall, ICRM offers theoretical guidances to radioactive drainage management and red mud reuse by exhibiting superior U adsorption capacity and positive potential charges under acidic conditions.

Aggrandizement of uranium (VI) removal performance of Lentinus concinnus biomass by attachment of 2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid ligand

Omur Celikbicak et al.

Summary: The study found that the native and DABSA attached Lentinus concinnus biomasses showed significantly increased uranium ion adsorption capacity at 25 degrees C. The negative Delta G degrees values indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous, mainly attributed to amine, carboxyl, and sulfate groups identified by ATR-FTIR data.

Utilization of Citrullus lanatus L. seeds to synthesize a novel MnFe2O4-biochar adsorbent for the removal of U(VI) from wastewater: Insights and comparison between modified and raw biochar

Waqas Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study investigated the adsorption of U(VI) from wastewater using biochar derived from Citrullus lanatus L. seeds and found that the MnFe2O4 modified biochar significantly enhanced U(VI) adsorption, with the best performance observed at 318 K. This modification could provide an efficient alternative adsorbent for U(VI) removal in various environmental conditions, contributing to resource utilization and sustainable management of the materials studied while protecting the environment and human health.

Reactions of nitrite with goethite and surface Fe(II)-goethite complexes

P. Dhakal et al.

Summary: Chemodenitrification, the abiotic reduction of nitrite by iron (II), is an important process in nitrogen cycling due to its source of nitrous oxide production. This study investigated the reactivity of nitrite with goethite and Fe(II)-treated goethite under anoxic conditions. The results showed that nitrite removal by goethite was faster at pH 5.5 and involved a combination of sorption and reduction processes when high aqueous Fe(II) was present. The formation of a surface complex resembling protonated nitrite was observed with implications for nitrogen cycling and release of atmospheric pollutants.
