Mini-metagenome analysis of psychrophilic electroactive biofilms based on single cell sorting

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Understanding the metabolic function of psychrophilic electroactive bacteria is crucial for studying extracellular electron transfer mechanisms under low temperatures. Through Raman activated cell ejection coupled high throughput sequencing, it was found that psychrophilic bacteria in biofilm communities have a high abundance of membrane transport functional genes ftsEX, indicating adaptation to low temperatures and maintenance of the electron pool for EET process. The identification of iron (Ill) transport system genes in high abundance suggests active metabolic reaction for potential electron transfer process mediated by c-type cytochromes.

1-D transient microbial fuel cell simulation considering biofilm growth and temperature variation

Behzad Shojaei et al.

Summary: The study introduces a dynamic, one-dimensional mathematical model for MFCs with a two-chamber structure and multi-species biofilm, coupling energy, mass, and charge conservation equations. The model's parameters were estimated and validated through experimental data, predicting the influence of temperature, boundary conditions, and substrate concentration variations on MFC performance. The model showed that power density can increase by 22.5% per 10 degrees C temperature increase at the maximum point, providing insights for optimizing design and operational conditions in MFCs.

Application of microbial fuel cells energized by oil palm trunk sap (OPTS) to remove the toxic metal from synthetic wastewater with generation of electricity

Asim Ali Yaqoob et al.

Summary: The study found that using oil palm trunk sap as an organic substrate can improve the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), resulting in higher power density and removal rates. Through biological identification, it was discovered that bacterial species with conductive pili are beneficial for metal removal and energy generation. According to the parameter optimization results, room temperature and a pH of 7 are ideal conditions for the industrial-scale application of MFCs.
