Reactive compatibilization and properties of low-cost and high-performance PBAT/thermoplastic starch blends

Juan Bai et al.

Summary: Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is widely used in the production of biodegradable films due to its high elongation, flexibility, and processability. However, its high cost compared to traditional plastics such as polyethylene has led to research on reducing PBAT cost through blending with thermoplastic starch (TPS) using reactive epoxy compatibilizer (REC) and two-step extrusion. The results showed that REC improved compatibility and mechanical properties of PBAT/TPS blends, with blends obtained through two-step extrusion showing a bicontinuous phase structure and excellent performance even with high TPS contents.

Summary: This study successfully prepared a poly (butylene succinate) / corn starch blend material with good tensile properties by adding ionic liquid-modified corn starch. The ionic liquid acted as a plasticizer and a compatibilizer in the blend, significantly reducing the crystallinity of the material and improving the morphology of the blend.

The effects of melt grafted maleated polybutylene succinate on the properties of poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyhexanoate)/polybutylene succinate blends

Mohd Zharif Ahmad Thirmizir et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of maleated PBS as a compatibilizer to enhance the properties of PHBHH/PBS blends. The addition of an appropriate amount of PBSgMA increased the tensile and flexural strength of the blends. Water absorption tests showed that compatibilized blends absorbed slightly more water, but did not result in severe permanent damage.
