Computational general relativistic force-free electrodynamics: II. Characterization of numerical diffusivity

J. F. Mahlmann et al.

Summary: Scientific codes serve as a crucial link between theory and experiment, providing insight into extreme energy flows in the universe. Understanding numerical diffusion in these codes is essential for assessing their reliability, with a minimum of eight numerical cells per characteristic size needed for consistency between numerical and physical results. High-order discretization of force-free currents can achieve nearly ideal convergence for smooth plasma wave dynamics, but modeling resistive layers requires suitable current prescriptions or sub-grid modeling for parallel current evolution.

Dynamic Alignment and Plasmoid Formation in Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

Alexander Chernoglazov et al.

Summary: The study presents high-resolution 2D and 3D simulations of magnetized decaying turbulence in relativistic, resistive magnetohydrodynamics, showing dynamic formation of large-scale intermittent long-lived current sheets being disrupted into plasmoid chains by the tearing instability. The magnetic energy spectra are proportional to k (-3/2) for strong guide-field turbulence, while they are proportional to k (-5/3) for weak guide-field turbulence, with dynamic alignment of Elsasser fields, velocity, and magnetic fields pronounced in the former case.

Fast Dissipation of Colliding Alfven Waves in a Magnetically Dominated Plasma

Xinyu Li et al.

Summary: The dissipation mechanism involving the collision of two anti-aligned strong Alfven waves form a thin current sheet perpendicular to the background magnetic field, accelerating particles to high energies and dissipation a large fraction of wave energy. This fast dissipation process is activated when the amplitude ratio A > 1/2 and may occur in various objects with perturbed magnetic fields. The mechanism transitions to normal, slower magnetic reconnection at higher amplitude ratios A >> 1.

Alfven Wave Mode Conversion in Pulsar Magnetospheres

Yajie Yuan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the radio emission anomaly coincident with the 2016 glitch of the Vela pulsar, suggesting it may be caused by a starquake launching Alfven waves into the magnetosphere. Through simulations of Alfven wave conversion into fast magnetosonic waves, the conversion efficiency is found to be influenced by amplitude and field line position. Further research is needed to determine whether mode conversion alone can reactivate the pulsar on a short timescale.
