Soil organic matter stabilization at molecular scale: The role of metal cations and hydrogen bonds

Edgar Galicia-Andres et al.

Summary: Soil organic matter is composed of molecular species that can assemble into high-weight macromolecular species or collections of low-weight molecular species under different conditions. Metal cations play a key role in the formation of organic matter aggregates, promoting the formation of larger molecular size aggregates. The absence of cations can lead to the destabilization of organic matter and potential dispersion of its components.

Exploring the structure and dynamics of proteins in soil organic matter

Mathias Gotsmy et al.

Summary: The study utilized molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the structural stability and interaction characteristics of selected proteins in soil organic matter (SOM). The results indicated that the interaction between proteins and SOM is primarily governed by electrostatic and van der Waals forces, with functional groups of SOM molecules arranged around proteins in a similar pattern.

Hydrophobicity and Charge Distribution Effects in the Formation of Bioorganoclays

Peter Grancic et al.

Summary: This article explores the interactions responsible for the formation of phosphatidylcholine-kaolinite bioclay through classical molecular dynamic simulations. The phosphatidylcholine molecules bind to the kaolinite surface via their zwitterionic heads or hydrophobic tails, forming irregular layers with a preferred parallel orientation. The flexibility and disorder of the tails vary depending on their distance from the surface and the density of surface coating, showing significant differences in binding with respect to different kaolinite basal surfaces.

On the Adsorption Mechanism of Humic Substances on Kaolinite and Their Microscopic Structure

Edgar Galicia-Andres et al.

Summary: Soil organic matter and various inorganic minerals play crucial roles in the formation of soil structure. This study used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the interactions between humic substances and kaolinite, revealing how different kaolinite surfaces affect the stability of humic substances microaggregates. The results showed that stable aggregates of humic substances can disintegrate when confined in kaolinite nanopores, with stronger adsorption on the polar aluminol surface compared to the hydrophobic siloxane surface.

Summary: Soil Organic Matter (SOM) is a complex and heterogeneous mixture of organic compounds, and understanding its structure and water accessibility can be improved through the use of standardized humic substances samples. The study utilized the Vienna Soil Organic Matter Modeler 2 to investigate properties of standard Leonardite Humic Acid (LHA) at a nanoscopic level, revealing that a significant fraction of water molecules are confined between organic compounds.
