The effect of body position on maternal cardiovascular function during sleep and wakefulness in late pregnancy

Anna Ishkova et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of left-lateral and supine positions on maternal cardiovascular function during wakefulness and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in late pregnancy. The results showed no significant differences in blood pressure between the left-lateral and supine positions during wakefulness and sleep. However, heart rate was higher in the supine position, and pulse arrival time was shorter in the supine position during both wakefulness and sleep. These findings suggest that the supine position may have some impact on cardiovascular function during sleep.

The effects of maternal position, in late gestation pregnancy, on placental blood flow and oxygenation: an MRI study

Sophie Couper et al.

Summary: Research demonstrates that maternal supine sleep position in late pregnancy is associated with reduced oxygen transfer and blood flow to the fetus, increasing the risk of stillbirth, although the specific mechanisms remain unclear.

An MRI approach to assess placental function in healthy humans and sheep

Brahmdeep S. Saini et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using MRI to measure blood flow and oxygen content in utero can reliably quantify uteroplacental and fetal oxygen delivery and consumption in both humans and sheep, providing a comprehensive assessment of placental function. This approach offers a novel clinical test for placental function evaluation.

Fetal heart rate during maternal sleep

Janet A. DiPietro et al.

Summary: The study found that there were both similarities and differences in heart rate patterns between pregnant women and their fetuses. Both fetal and maternal heart rates decreased during the night, with a steeper decline before 01:00. Fetal heart rate decreased when the mother fell asleep, but was not significantly associated with maternal sleep stages.

Fetal Heart Rate Decelerations in Women with Sleep-Disordered Breathing

Summary: Emerging literature suggests that women with sleep-disordered breathing are at increased risk for gestational hypertension/preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. Initial data in this study indicate a significant association between maternal respiratory events and fetal heart rate decelerations, potentially impacting fetal well-being.
