Surface Charge Density in Electrical Double Layer Capacitors with Nanoscale Cathode-Anode Separation

Leying Qing et al.

Summary: Using dynamic density functional theory, the charging dynamics, equilibrium structure, and energy storage in nanoscale electrical double layer capacitors with slit geometry were studied. It was found that charge neutrality did not hold during the dynamic charging process or at the final equilibrium state for small separations. Factors such as ion distribution, concentration, cathode-anode separation, and applied voltage impact surface charge density and charge accumulation within the half-cell.

Ionic liquid-metal interface: The origins of capacitance peaks

Iuliia V. Voroshylova et al.

Summary: The complexity of electrode charge screening in ionic liquids is well-known, resulting in distinctive structural changes and capacitance peaks at interfaces due to strong ion correlations. Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to study differential capacitance for various ILs with metal electrodes, highlighting the challenge of obtaining a capacitance-potential curve. This study focused on MD simulations of a specific IL at a gold surface, revealing the dependence of capacitance on the fitting method and identifying capacitance peaks and structural reorganization types.

Demystifying the Stern layer at a metal-electrolyte interface: Local dielectric constant, specific ion adsorption, and partial charge transfer

Xuepeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the charging behavior of an Ag (111) electrode in NaF aqueous solutions using experimental results and theoretical calculations. When the electrode is negatively charged, surface charge density can be described by a neutral Stern layer, while the specific adsorption of F- ions must be considered when the electrode is positively charged. The findings shed insight on the molecular characteristics of the Stern layer and the charge behavior of adsorbed species not specified by conventional EDL models.

Origin of Asymmetric Electric Double Layers at Electrified Oxide/Electrolyte Interfaces

Mei Jia et al.

Summary: In this study, a theoretical model for computing the differential Helmholtz capacitance of oxide-electrolyte interfaces was developed using density functional theory-based finite-field molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the dipole of interfacial adsorbed groups significantly modulates the double layer potential, leading to asymmetric distribution of capacitance. It was also found that dissociative water adsorption favors inner sphere binding of counterions, resulting in higher Helmholtz capacitance compared to nondissociative adsorption at the interface.

Adsorption of Block-Polyelectrolytes on an Oppositely Charged Surface

Quhui Chang et al.

Summary: The study found that the alteration of charge distribution due to different PE chain structures directly affects the adsorption behavior of PEs on an oppositely charged surface. In a salt-free system, PE chain structure and sequence variables have a significant impact on adsorption behaviors, showing complex behaviors in adsorption amounts. Additionally, overcharging only occurs when the bare surface charge density is low enough.

Effects of Confinement and Ion Adsorption in Ionic Liquid Supercapacitors with Nanoporous Electrodes

Zengju Lian et al.

Summary: The study found that ion crowding near the electrode surface induced by ion correlations is responsible for the anomalous increase in capacitance as pore size decreases. Reducing ion correlation strength increases capacitance and suppresses the anomalous size dependence. The capacitance peak diverges for a given pore size when the ion correlation strength reaches a critical value, and shifts to smaller pore sizes as the correlation strength decreases.

A dynamic reaction density functional theory for interfacial reaction-diffusion coupling at nanoscale

Weiqiang Tang et al.

Summary: The newly proposed dynamic reaction density functional theory (DRxDFT) combines classical dynamic DFT with reaction collision theory to describe reaction-diffusion coupling at the nanoscale. The enhancement of reaction efficiency is found to be strongly determined by the degree of coupling between reaction and diffusion, rather than just the increase in reaction or diffusion rate.

Preferential Ion Adsorption in Blue Energy Applications

Christopher Balzer et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of asymmetric preferential ion adsorption on the available blue energy in CDLE process, finding that it can enhance energy output and shift the potential difference towards the spontaneous voltage. In the mixing of river water and saltwater, preferential adsorption can provide as much as 10% more available energy compared to indifferent electrode surfaces.

Electrolyte structure near electrodes with molecular-size roughness

Timur Aslyamov et al.

Summary: Understanding the influence of electrode surface morphology on ions' distribution is crucial for designing supercapacitors with enhanced energy density characteristics. The developed model describes an increase in the effective electrostatic field near the rough surface of electrodes, leading to intensified spatial separation of ions at the electrode-electrolyte interface. This research could provide a new tool for optimizing electrode surface parameters to improve capacitance values.
