Co13O8-metalloxocubes: a new class of perovskite-like neutral clusters with cubic aromaticity

Lijun Geng et al.

Summary: Utilizing a newly developed deep-ultraviolet laser ionization mass spectrometry technique, reactions between neutral cobalt clusters and oxygen were observed, leading to the discovery of a very stable cluster species Co13O8 dominating the mass distribution in the presence of a large flow rate of oxygen gas. The global-minimum structural search revealed a unique cubic structure and distinctive stability of the neutral Co13O8 cluster, forming a new class of metal oxides termed as 'metalloxo cubes'. Thermodynamics and kinetics calculations illustrated the structural evolution from icosahedral Co-13 to metalloxocube Co13O8 with decreased energy, enhanced stability, and aromaticity. This class of neutral oxygen-passivated metal clusters may be ideal candidates for genetic materials due to the stability resulting from the cubic aromaticity of the building blocks.

Catalytic Co-Conversion of CH4 and CO2 Mediated by Rhodium-Titanium Oxide Anions RhTiO2-

Yuan Yang et al.

Summary: The study identifies a promising active species for dry (CO2) reforming of methane to syngas, and emphasizes the importance of temperature control over elementary steps in practical catalysis. This may significantly alleviate the carbon deposition originating from the pyrolysis of methane.

How O2-Binding Affects Structural Evolution of Medium Even-Sized Gold Clusters Aun- (n=20-34)

Navneet Singh Khetrapal et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of O-2-binding on the structures of medium even-sized gold clusters, focusing on the special size region of n = 20-34. The research identifies a series of structural transitions from pyramidal to fused-planar to core-shell structures in AunO2- clusters, providing insights into the reactivity of Au-n(-)(n = 26-32) clusters towards O-2.

Spin accommodation and reactivity of nickel clusters with oxygen: Aromatic and magnetic metalloxocube Ni13O8±

Lijun Geng et al.

Summary: This study observed the gaseous reactions of Ni-n(+/-) clusters with oxygen and identified magic clusters of Ni13O8 +/-, with quantum chemistry calculations revealing their structural and spin arrangement characteristics. The Ni13O8- clusters demonstrated cubic aromaticity and ferromagnetism, while the Ni13O8+ clusters exhibited lower-spin ground states and ferrimagnetism associated with spin-down population on the central Ni atom. This class of metalloxocube clusters hold properties of aromaticity and ferromagnetism/ferrimagnetism, leading to the development of cluster-genetic materials with multi-functionality.

Cryokinetics and spin quenching in the N2 adsorption onto rhodium cluster cations

Amelie A. Ehrhard et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the adsorption limits of N-2 on Rh-i(+) clusters strongly depend on the cluster size, with some clusters having rough surfaces and others having smooth surfaces. The sequential adsorption of N-2 is found to be the only significant reaction channel, with occasional desorption steps indicating adsorption-desorption equilibria. DFT calculations show that an adsorption induced spin quenching occurs at considerable N-2 coverage on Rh-5(+).

Gas-phase preparation and the stability of superatomic Nb11O15-

Xin Lei et al.

Summary: The study investigates the reactions of pure metal clusters Nb-n(-) with dioxygen in the gas phase, showing that low concentrations of dioxygen result in oxygen-addition products, while high concentrations lead to oxygen-etching reactions producing molecular niobium oxides. Interestingly, at an intermediate dioxygen concentration, a highly selective product Nb11O15- is observed. Density functional theory calculations reveal the stability of Nb11O15- due to its unique geometric structure.

Interactions between water and rhodium clusters: molecular adsorption versus cluster adsorption

Yuhan Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interactions between gas-phase rhodium clusters and water, revealing a size-dependent preference of water adsorption on rhodium clusters with different structural features. Density functional theory calculations show the presence of distinct covalent molecular adsorption and electrostatic cluster-cluster interactions in rhodium-water systems.
