Nanocavity Clock Spectroscopy: Resolving Competing Exciton Dynamics in WSe2/MoSe2 Heterobilayers

Molly A. May et al.

Summary: Transition-metal dichalcogenide heterostructures serve as an emergent platform for various novel many-body states, but their exciton dynamics are challenging to unravel due to competing processes with varying time scales. By utilizing a nano-optical cavity, this study successfully controls the radiative and nonradiative relaxation of intra- and interlayer excitons in a WSe2/MoSe2 heterobilayer. The results demonstrate a transition from nonradiative quenching to Purcell-enhanced radiation, allowing for a comprehensive determination of radiative and nonradiative lifetimes of excitons in the system.

Tip-Induced Nano-Engineering of Strain, Bandgap, and Exciton Funneling in 2D Semiconductors

Yeonjeong Koo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates dynamic nano-mechanical strain-engineering of naturally-formed wrinkles in a WSe2 monolayer using hyperspectral adaptive tip-enhanced PL (a-TEPL) spectroscopy. The results show that by dynamically adjusting the wrinkles at the nanoscale, exciton dynamics and emission properties can be tuned reversibly. This provides a new strategy for robust, tunable, and ultracompact nano-optical sources in atomically thin semiconductors.

Strong localization effects in the photoluminescence of transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers

A. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The local photoluminescence signatures of van der Waals heterobilayers composed of exfoliated monolayers in the TMDC family can be influenced by additional PL signals near reported energy of interlayer exciton transitions, possibly due to local strains. Formation of even a single nanobubble as small as 60 nm in a otherwise flat heterobilayer can induce suspicious PL features, showing the potential impact of local deformations on photoluminescence behavior. A peak assigned to the interlayer exciton in MoS2-WSe2 is observed at around 1.0 eV.

Ambient Tip-Enhanced Photoluminescence with 5 nm Spatial Resolution

Chih-Feng Wang et al.

Summary: This study achieves record spatial resolution in ambient tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL) from CdSe/ZnS semiconductor quantum dots by taking advantage of surface roughness at the apex of a sputtered plasmonic gold probe. The reproducibility of observations is demonstrated using different plasmonic probes and samples. The high spatial resolution in TEPL is attributed to field enhancement at the metal tip-fluorophore interface.
