Tetrel and Pnictogen Bonds Complement Hydrogen and Halogen Bonds in Framing the Interactional Landscape of Barbituric Acids

Vijith Kumar et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that imide protons form short hydrogen bonds and bromine or chlorine atoms form halogen bonds in barbituric acid and indandione derivatives; imide nitrogen atoms and C(sp(2)) and C(sp(3)) atoms act as effective bond donors, resulting in distinctive crystal lattices.

Experimental 13C and 1H Solid-State NMR Response in Weakly Tetrel-Bonded Methyl Groups

Scott A. Southern et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of tetrel bonds on C-13 and H-1 solid-state NMR spectroscopic responses, revealing that tetrel bonds can moderately increase the chemical shift of methyl(13)C atoms with a weak inverse correlation with bond length. Methyl proton chemical shifts are also influenced by tetrel bonds, although no strong correlations with structural features were observed based on experimental data. The research highlights the importance of understanding how tetrel bonds and weak CH···O hydrogen bonds can affect NMR responses in crystallography applications.

Field-stepped ultra-wideline NMR at up to 36 T: On the inequivalence between field and frequency stepping

Ivan Hung et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates how field-stepped NMR spectroscopy using the series-connected hybrid magnet at the U.S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory can be used to acquire ultra-wideline powder spectra of nuclei with very large quadrupolar interactions. It also highlights the significant differences in spectra acquired using different methods, such as WURST/CPMG compared to the frequency-stepped method commonly used with superconducting magnets, due to magnetic field-dependent NMR interactions. This finding underscores the importance of taking into account the inequivalence when accurately determining quadrupolar coupling and chemical shift parameters.

Catalysis with Supramolecular Carbon-Bonding Interactions

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: A new catalysis platform, supramolecular carbon-bonding catalysis, utilizes weak interactions between carbon centers of catalysts and electron donors to facilitate chemical reactions. By using cyclopropane derivatives with specific functional groups as catalysts, the approach demonstrates general catalysis capability in various benchmark reactions, including a challenging terpene cyclization. Co-crystal structures, comparison experiments, and titrations support a catalysis mode involving carbon-bonding activation of Lewis basic reactants.

Anion...Anion Interactions Involving σ-Holes of Perrhenate, Pertechnetate and Permanganate Anions

Andrea Daolio et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical evidence suggests that interactions between electron rich atoms and tetroxide anions of group 7 elements involve a new type of attractive sigma-hole interactions, leading to the formation of supramolecular anionic dimers or polymers. These interactions are categorized as matere bonds (MaB) and distinguished from classical metal-ligand coordination bonds.

Probing Halogen Bonds by Scalar Couplings

Bono Jimmink et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that scalar coupling constants are modulated by halogen bonding, with the magnitude change of one-bond couplings correlating to the interaction strength. The findings, based on NMR data and quantum chemical calculations of 42 halogen-bonded complexes in dichloromethane solution, suggest that scalar couplings can be used as a method for characterizing halogen bond complexes in solution and potentially for other types of weak sigma-hole interactions.
