Stabilization Factor of Anion-Excess Fluorite Phase for Fast Anion Conduction

Keiga Fukui et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pressure-chemical composition phase diagram of the LaHO-LaH3 system, focusing on the high-conductivity LaH1+2xO1-x phase with anion-excess fluorite structure. By maintaining the fluorite lattice and introducing excess H- ions at regular anion positions with distribution at interstitial sites, the stability of the anion-excess fluorite structure can be achieved, avoiding defect clustering and enabling fast anion conduction.

Influence of Cation (RE = Sc, Y, Gd) and O/H Anion Ratio on the Photochromic Properties of REOxH3-2x Thin Films

Giorgio Colombi et al.

Summary: Rare-earth oxyhydride REOxH3-2x thin films exhibit a reversible photochromic effect at ambient conditions, with the extent of optical change and bleaching speed largely tunable by the O/H anion ratio and cation choice. Data suggests that oxyhydrides formed by REs with larger ionic radius have greater optical contrast and faster bleaching speed, indicating a possible dependency of the photochromic mechanism on anion site-hopping.

Environmental dependence of the photochromic effect of oxygen-containing rare-earth metal hydrides

Dmitrii Moldarev et al.

Summary: The study shows the dependence of the photochromic effect on environment and triggering light, with the first darkening/bleaching cycle of freshly grown films accompanied by the release of weakly bound hydrogen. There is no further exchange of material with the environment in consecutive photochromic cycles. Moreover, the kinetics of bleaching is reported to be dependent on the gas environment after darkening with light of energies below the optical bandgap of the film.

Photochromic Response of Encapsulated Oxygen-Containing Yttrium Hydride Thin Films

Marcos V. Moro et al.

Summary: Photochromic oxygen-containing yttrium-hydride thin films were synthesized using argon magnetron sputtering on microscope slides, some of which were encapsulated with thin, transparent diffusion-barrier layers to provide stability and maintain photochromic performance. The study showed that environmental factors have minimal impact on the photochromic process, and encapsulation effectively prevents degradation in aging of the films.

Computational Chemistry-Guided Syntheses and Crystal Structures of the Heavier Lanthanide Hydride Oxides DyHO, ErHO, and LuHO

Nicolas Zapp et al.

Summary: Heteroanionic hydrides show great potential in functional materials design. By employing solid-state reactions, the cubic rare earth hydride oxides DyHO, ErHO, and LuHO were synthesized, each exhibiting unique crystal structures. Computational chemistry studies suggest that the formation of REHO compounds for smaller rare earth elements is less favorable compared to sesquioxides, requiring mild synthesis conditions for their synthesis.
