Electron-Triggered Metamorphism in Palladium-Driven Self-Assembled Architectures

Summary: The metal-induced self-assembly strategy promotes the pi-dimerization of viologen-based radicals, forming discrete box-shaped 2:2 macrocycles or coordination polymers. Changing the redox state of the tectons leads to reversible inflation/deflation of the macrocyclic assemblies, with viologen-centered electron transfer triggering dissociation of coordination polymers. The driving force of the disassembling process is the formation of stabilized 2:2 assemblies through pi-dimerization of viologen cation radicals.
